I was pm'ing with smellie a few weeks back and mentioned a friend showed me a few pictures of a lee enfield in an aluminum stock that he owns. After reading one of smellies responses to a thread about the stocks I thought I would get a few pictures from my friend and see if there is anymore info on what he has.

these are the pictures he has sent me and I'll try and direct him to this thread.

here is the info he gave me about the rifle

"i have in my posession a 1917 dated bsa rifle. have not been able to find any info. G.R. B.S.A.CO. 1917 SHT LE
FTR. BARREL AND ACTION MATCH BOLT #85337. now the good part. it has an alloy forend with wooden insert-it is definately a casting and lines up very well. the pictures show orangey brown ovals which seem to be necessary for a descent grip. sight has 2 numbers H above 33677 line through it U above 4566 crossed out."

BINGO!!!

Peas in a pod.

I have its exact duplicate, missing the wood, on a 1918 NRF, also a 1945 Enfield rework and barrel, numbers matching.

Story was that it was sent to Canada in 1945 for evaluation and 'borrowed' in 1946, spent many years on a farm.

Supposedly, there were 6 of them made.

There also were 12 Ross Mark III butts reworked to fit the SMLE. My rifle is fitted with one.

Can you get full-length photos, butt photos?

I would REALLY like to resto mine.

The YELLOW is Zinc Chromate, used to keep the Aluminum from corroding. The BROWN appears to be standard British Army Brown paint.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thank you.

Do you have ESP? Practice Witchcraft? Have visions?

SMELLIE and I were just talking about the Aluminum stocked SMLE rifles this afternoon when we were sucking coffee together.

Those side panel grips look a bit "homemade" as they look to be cut out but not sanded on the edges.

I was thinking about the same thing today and the owner sent me the photos again. A very nice gentleman who is sometimes on the sight that I almost had an EE deal with owns this, our deal didn't work out be he sent me a few photos of this rifle months ago and it really interested me.

I've just been into collecting enfields for a little while but have seemed to have had the luck to have stumbled on some rare pieces, a 1941 longbranch, a indonesian smle and now this.

The interwebs are really amazing with what you can find and share. If anyone has an idea on value please pm me so I can send the owner an idea of value if he wants to update his insurance etc.

Wow is right! I would hardly think them a military model though, experimental or not... no shrouding for the sights and what looks like no provision for cleaning kit in the stock.
Still amazes me what's out there, though... hiding away in someone's closet.
