Lee Enfield caliber conversion to 38/357 or ...?

I had No 4 action rebarrelled to .38 Special.
I haven't stocked it yet, or fired it.
It will be a single shot and fitted with PH 5C.
It will let me shoot an Enfield on the local 50 yard range where only handgun cartridges can be used.
I won't sacrifice an S&W 52 magazine for it.

A DIY single-stack magazine for a rimmed cartridge is a big challenge !
Desert Eagle, S&W 52.. 357 Coonan. There are options.

Ejection is always an issue with these pistol cartage Lee. 9mm one was a pain, the 45 acp its hit or miss. Only real way is machining a slot in the bolt head for a spring loaded finger

Keep it simple. I used 2 plates when I attempted a mag adapter.

have not found a good magazine candidate yet. Bid on a few DE mags that were at the last auction but they went way higher then I wanted to spend.

I think there was a remmington 788 ?? that was chambered in 44 Mag and Numerich had mags listed for that, 3 round mags.

I might just look at making a single stack blind mag of some sort myself
My 9mm I'm considering a 5shot AR mag so it can be top loaded and not have issues with mag angles.

Once you keep the round from flipping out of the mag, they chamber pretty easy.

the Remington Lee used single stack mags. you could cut the center out of a no4 Mag and make a new follower.
some people have done this for 45-70. you would also have to fill in the mag well to fit the resized mag.
then the cartridge length is the problem.
that's some nice work. Agellan

I think the length of the 44Mag will make it easier to work with then the 45ACP for feeding

I am currently working on another project and will be buying a reamer for 357Herret so that is always going to be an option down the road. 357Herret uses the 30-30 as a parent case, shorter and fatter.

Hi diegocn,

Are you still interested in a 357 magnum Enfield conversion ?
I am currently working on it using Desert Eagle magazine.
I made a magazine adapter and the associated mag catch/release mechanism.
It feeds and extracts well, but I still have to work on the ejection.
So it is still a "work in progress"

PS: I am the author of the youtube channel "M Agellan" with the Enfield conversions
I found your YouTube channel, and love your 7.62 Tokarev Enfield conversion! 9x19mm will fit and feed (with potential hiccups) out of standard Tokarev magazines, or even 9mm 1911 mags could be used like the .45 Rhineland kits, opening that up as a possible option. Damn, I really want a 9mm Enfield now.

I have a Rhineland 45 ACP conversion that a friend did most of the work on, I ground the barrel a bit so I can use a standard extractor.
When I rack it fast, I can use wadcutter rds. I had it out yesterday but it was shooting a bit high so I asked him to do it for me.
A simple small screw for elevation would be simpleist I think

You give me good ideas. I'm going to steal them.
Now I want a conversion to 44 Magnum around a Desert Eagle magazine (for ease of ejection, rim diameter close to 303) and to 9x19 around a Tokarev magazine (because I already have some).
But let's try not to be distracted and try to complete this project in 357 first.

I probably should have based my sights on ball ammo. Than my SWC reloads. Had mine out last week and was high and left. But can adjust for windage, so not a huge issue.

What about Ruger 44, or 77/357/44 mags?

I agree. I bought a beater No.4 sporter to attempt a .44mag conversion and it will nearly feed .44mag out of the LE mag as it sits. Rim diameter is quite close as well. My biggest hurdle is finding a .44mag barrel blank that can be easily fit to the action. I contacted Criterion about making one for me, since they already make match barrels for the No.4 but they never replied.

I will need to check where I got mine from, it was from one of the supporting dealers and was less then $100

I should of bought 3 or 4

That's a screaming deal for a blank. Any info you can share would be great. It's a long winter and I can only reload so much before I run out of components...

I'm on vacation right now and should be out hunting, if the snow would stop.... I'll pop out to the shop later (once I'm done my coffee and before I switch to beer) and see if I can find who the dealer was.

I have been trying to find an available Rhineland kit but everywhere is out of stock. So been toying with the idea of get some parts together. If I am go the part route I could chamber the barrel in a lot of different calibers. While welding earlier today I thought of 454 Casull. Mag could be a challenge.

Often the 45acp barrels provided in the kits need to be "fitted" so they will headspace and feed properly. They aren't just a slam dunk, throw them together and all is well.

I saw a lovely No4 conversion chambered to 357 Maximum. The fellow had several hundred rounds of brass, new in their original bags on hand and nothing to shoot it in.

His idea was to convert a Mod 94 lever action or a Savage 340 to the cartridge, but had an idea to convert one of the clunker No4 actions he had in the bins to 357 maximum instead.

He was hunting with it, loaded with 200 grain projectiles.
