Its a sporterized long lee,LE1* or MLE, i dont believe its called a mk1, as that is a different rifle, smle/shtle no1mk1

You can see where the volley sights were and where the wood has been repalced there. The barrel has been cut about an inch and a half. Its missing the dust cover and the lugs for it on the bolt. Also the mag cut off is missing.

I had to look twice at that rifle.

It appears identical (and I mean identical, even to the colour of the wood) to one that I had. The rifle is long gone, im looking for pics.

There is likely a gunsmith who did this sporterisation long ago. I have had two rifles now, with the same style wood, checkering, even the barrel was turned down the same way.

I note that your barrel is a commercial replacement, so was mine.

So you have an ex-military rifle that has been sporterised, probably in Canada by a competent smith or hobbiest who did more than one.

^^ One of the LE1 barrels i turned down into LEC barrels has the same front sight on it as this rifle in the thread. I was wondering about it, and i believe you just cleared it up for me. Thanks Englishman_ca

It is a Mk1 or more correctly a MLE Mk1* the following SMLE Mk1 however is not called a No1 Mk1 as they were "omitted from vocabulary" in the 1926 change of nonclameture & were never redesignated as a No1 only the MkIII & MkIII* were.
