I have a MK4 no1 enfield that has very weak ejection of fired brass. If i bring the bolt back slowly the fired brass will be thrown a few inches, if you operate the bolt with "authority" then the brass drops right in the magwell either flat or in the stovepipe position, which in either case requires you to manually pick it out or it would jam the action as the bolt tries to feed a fresh cartridge.

Any ideas? Is there something that someone can recommend to try to adjust/fix?

Two things to check....1st is weak or broken extractor spring in bolt head. 2nd is the ejector screw that's in the sidewal of the action...has to be just enough clearance for the bolt to slide. Ron

Thanks for the reply The brass "ejects" (using that term loosely) before it his the ejector screw, which does protrude into the receiver with minimal clearance to the bolt path. It seems to rub against the inside of the receiver and become dislodged from the bolt because of the friction. Should it make it all the way to the ejector screw? There is actually a fair bit of brass rubbed off and deposited on the inside left wall of the receiver.

The ejector screw is for ejecting live or drill/practice rounds & plays no part in the ejection of fired brass so has no part in your problem, try giving the bolthead a good clean, making sure there is no dirt/crap lodged in behind the extractor or spring or if anything is broken, if no luck after this, look at replacing extractor & spring.

Extractor pushes the fired case onto the LH receiver rail; friction on this is what causes actual ejection.

Another home remedy is to undercut SLIGHTLY the inside of the ARM of the Extractor, leaving the HOOK alone. This will allow the Extractor to push the casing farther to the left, increasing the amount of friction.

As mentioned, a weak Extractor Spring..... or crud between the Extractor and the Bolt Head..... can give the same problem.

Look first, clean second, mod third, replace parts when you must.

Have fun!
