I recently acquired a lee enfield mk4 no1 :D and i want to mount a scope on it for hunting this fall, but i dont know what kind of mount i should get. i want 1 that doesnt require a gunsmith to install but is still very durable. what kind of mounts have you guys used on your enfields? any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

Any scoping I do on "sporter" 303's is with the Weaver TO-1 base, that requires drilling and tapping. I did use an S&K mount once and found that it was durable and held zero well. This mount is a non-gunsmith mount, requiring no holes be drilled. It uses a wedge system to hold it in place. One drawback of this is the added weight.

I just finish custom making my own weaver rail scope base for my 3shtle
i used the TO-1 dovetail base as a template.
I hate the TO-1 because there is no way to lock the rings from sliding under recoil. the weaver rail i just made up has the benefit of the cross slots to securely mount the rings. I'll try and get some pics

with the TO-1 base you use a .22 style ring.

One system I like is a Parker Hale a20 front base block which requires two holes and a parker hale a21 rear base fastens where the rear battle sight goes. Then you need to get a set of PH RAHS3 (high) rings.by the time you gather all the parts you will be out about $100 but it is a nice solid system.

Another mount system I have on two of my sporters is a PH a29 side mount base but requires pretty extensive smithing to mount. This one uses low PH rings.

Although this is probally the sleekest and lowest option it is not the most solid one.

probally the easiest one for you would be either the ATI or S&K no gunsmithing mount.I just find that these make your scope very high.

S&K is the way to go.

and don't loose or cut up the micrometer rear sight you have there. That is considered the best original rear sight for an Enfield. One day you may want to restore that rifle.

You can use the ATI with low rings and a wooden cheekrest and it is really lower than many other arrangements and cheekweld is perfect.

The first part of this is true to a point. If you use the TO-1 mount, the front Weaver Tip-Off ring should be abutted to the rail stop on the front of the mount. The big thing here is to use a TO ring that has a serrated clamping edge, this will bite into the rail. Other cheap 22 rings will just slide and screw up your scope (spoken from experience).

yeah i do want 2 restore it thats y i want a mount that requires no gunsmithing or holes 2 b drilled. also i need 2 find an original stock set 4 it.
