Another old thread bump. For anyone wondering how these stocks look, here is an idea. I bought a $175 sporterized SMLE off the EE. Another EE ad brought me to a CGN'er who was able to supply me all the metal bits and bobs. After a few hours of fine sanding and fitment, I started the finishing process. For me, I went with boiled linseed oil since that is, from what I gather, what the factories used. I did one coat a day for 6 days, with 0000 steel wool sanding between each coat. I hope to get it out to shoot on these days off.
I know I mentioned it in another thread, but it is worth thanking Marstar again for their exceptional service when I bought this stock set. They had no problem holding it to the side for me while I waited for other items to come in stock. Then they phoned when the items were in stock to complete the order... then phoned back to tell me they found a different shipping option in order to save me money! (Also, an after-order follow up e-mail that was a very pleasant surprise as well). This is my 3rd or 4th order from Marstar (the first being WAY back during the $75 SKS days), and with the service I have received, I look forward to shopping there again
Lastly, thanks to the wife for letting me commandeer her "Welcome to the Garden" bear and swap his sign for a rifle, which I think looks much better!

Completed No1 Mk3 restore
This was a LOT of work. Way more than I envisioned. The front sling swivel band is loose (once fully tightened) and any advice on how to solve this issue would be appreciated.
The stock was obtained from Marstar, thank you.. Thank you Black Box Customs for the cerakote (during the once a year half price sale). Both companies are a pleasure to deal with.
The missing metal parts were a (seemingly) endless list of bits that I obtained from Numrich, and several excellent GunNutz. It would have been a miserable failure without those guys helping out.
Next up will be a No4 Mk1. Here is what I will do differently:
- Complete the wood fitting and finishing AFTER obtaining all the metal bits and BEFORE any metal treatment (blueing cerakote etc). This sounds simple and sensible, but it's not really. I sent the metal parts to Black Box on the last day of the sale and I missed a few, which required a second batch of cerakote, which was no longer at the sale price.
- Take more pictures of the sporter rifle BEFORE disassembly. This just makes a more complete record of the project.
The wood fitting took the most time. The stock blanks come machined with holes drilled and recesses machined for every part, but the amount of detail fitting is substantial. Time and Patience.
Tools I used:
- Dremel for both wood and minor metal fitting
- wood chisels (sharp!) and mallot
- sand paper. 80 thru 400 grit.
- foam sanding blocks various grits
- 0000 Steel Wool
- Linseed Oil
- Diamond rifflers, mini/medium/large files
- 3/4 steel bar wrapped in sand paper for fitting barrel into stock
- drill bits
- stationary belt sander using various grits
- A good gun smithing screwdriver set (hollow ground)
- punches/hammers for rivet setting
- rubber mallet
- various homemade tools for extracting the butt stock bolt washers, and other tasks
- probably a lot more that I've forgotten

Very nice restoration job guy329. Or should I say 'customization' ? lol
Either way, very sharp looking, and though not traditional, I think that ODG cerakote looks great on the SMLE,.. suits it.
(edit: I've tilted my display monitor and now the colour looks a bit different in the light in my room. I see it looks kind of like bronze now. I know the camera flash can sometimes change the colour tone too. Which cerakote colour is it actually?) Still looks good.
You also got a very nice stock set there with beautiful wood grain. Well done overall.
Did the cerakote affect the slick functioning of the bolt at all? (as most SMLE's and No.4's have butter smooth and quick bolts). Just curious.
