I have a Lee Enfield No4 Mk1/2 with a bolt that runs through the lower fore stock maybe 2 inches ahead of the magazine. I have looked about but I can't find much in the way of examples or explanations. Can anyone help out?
This is the so-called "Ishapore screw" modification which the Indians seemed to do as a matter of routine when overhauling their Lee-Enfields. It detracts from the appearance of the rifle and really doesn't improve the functionality.
Apparently, the British identified the foreend has a weakness but never did anything about it. The Indians found out and carried out the modification when they did their inspection program.
