Hi everyone, I just purchased a unissued set of woods for a no4 mk1 lee enfield, but I can't seem to find a good MK1 rifle for sale at a good price, but there are some really nice MK2 locally at a reasonable price.

I spent 2-3 hours last night trying to find if a MK1 wood set would fit the Mk2, but all I could find was that the Mk2 wood fits the Mk1 rifle, but not the other way around.

Can it be done, and if so, what do I need to do?

The wood set I purchased is soo nice that I want to make sure I won't bubba it trying to install it on a Mk2.

Thanks a lot

I've been looking for a Mk2 set for a while. The Mk1 fore end can be installed on the MK2. You will need to install a transverse bolt in the back. Mk1 sets were modified to fit Mk2s in the work shops. Stratton shows it in his book.

Would it look modified or I could achieve a «factory look» easily?

Could I use the transverse bolt that are already on the sporter handguard?

Is there pictures or a DIY somewhere or a PDF of the Stratton book you are referring too?

Thanks

Yes you could use the old screw and nut. Scroll to the bottem of this link and you will see a photo of an armourers mod to the mk1 for end. The tie plate is removed, the wood cut out to allow for the trigger and the sides where the tie plate went , is filled with a D shaped piece of hard wood. A bit of fine carpentry and there it should be.

Thanks a lot for your help, I'll look into this!

From what I can see, the Mk2 where made post war and are usually in better condition, so if I can put my stock on it, I'll have both beauty and function!

Yes, the Mk2 variant came in about 1949 and was only made at Royal Ordnance Factory Fazackerley (ROF Faz)until the British stopped making them and sold the tooling to Pakistan Ordnance Factory (POF) which started making No.4Mk.2 rifles for their army. (I don't know if anyone has pinned down exactly when POF stopped making them (or even if they have, entirely) but it certainly isn't their current issue service rifle and POF No.4s have been sold surplus.)
