hi i am asking because i want to add a peep sight to my gun and want to get the right one. i have a mint condition 1942 lee enfield no4mk1*, with aprox 20 rounds total down the pipe. my qeustion is what kind of action is it?? p14,p17 what i dont know how to find out. shamefully the stock has been sporterized by previous owner. i will post a few detailed pictures of the gun and action in a few minutes just have to go get the camera. thank you any help would be greatly appreciated.
Its a Lee action, designed by James Paris Lee. Combined with the enfield rifling (left hand, 5 groove [in the original, but other # of groove too]) you have the Lee Enfield rifle.
As for sighting, the original military issue would have been zeroed to for the man that the rifle was issued to. This zero was for 300 yards, using the battle apeture, with the bayonet attached. (your sight the 300 yard one, fro the micrometer sight, the large apeture when sight is folded down).
What you can do is keep your current rear sight, shoot it at the range that you want to zero it. Find out how much elevation error there is and get a new front sight to compensate. There are 8 different sizes of front sight. -0.30, -0.15, 0.0, 0.015, 0.030, 0.045, 0.060, 0.075. At 100 yards, each sight changes the point of impact by 1.87 inches.
So now look at the front sight and read the size that is on it. Take that and your elevation error, and get the sight post that corrects it.
Example. At 100 yards your rifle is shooting 6 inches high, and you have a 0.015 marked front sight. Therefore a 0.060 front sight will bring you to within 0.39" of your point of aim.
Now the real trick is finding the size of front sight that you require. I've found 1 place in the US that lets you pick your sight size. The only problem is that they don't do international orders.
