Lee Enfield progress work PICS

My #5 was dripping some kind of oil out of the forend, I decided to sweat it out of there, well i kept that up for 6 nights of putting it in the oven on low heat all night and wrapping it up in paper towels like a mummy, there's still something in there I might just leave the rest of it in there depending on what the hell it was.

My '42 Lithgow is still a work in progress, I need someone to index the barrel properly, headspace, make a pin for the rear sight (going with a windage and elevation adjustable one) and figure out how to get the replacement buttstock off of there, it's on there good I was stupid enough to tap it in there with a wood club.

Hey Fat Tony- Don't be trying to force the buttstock bolt out while the forend is installed! You'll crack the forend. The square bolt tip locks into the rear of the forend.
Once the forend is off, you can do one of two things. Clamp a big, heavy long slotted screwdriver in a bench vice, pointed up. Lower the rifle down on to it and rotate the whole rifle to unscrew while pushing down hard. Or, use an impact driver with a big slotted tip. Guaranteed one or the other will do it.

Or if you're just refering to the wood having been pounded into the socket (??), just hit it up and down with your hand, it should loosen it. If all else fails, just buttstroke someone with it... ;)

Cantom funny you should say that, the original buttstock bolt was the proper Lithgow one with the square end, someone in the past did not know this :redface:and removed it the square end is pretty dinged up, the bubba forend was damaged beyond repair, the wood is a walnut set from Numrich the stock bolt is the replacement variety without the square end, I just used 2 of the later type spring washers to get it past flush when tight. I'm thinking of making up a clamp to fit around the buttstock, with maybe some old pieces of leather to protect the stock, and carefully tap on the clamp with a hammer to get it off, or maybe just leave it on there.

Sounds like you found out the hard way like I did about those damned square bolts...:runaway:

Have you got a carpeted floor? just try bumping the stock alternately up and down, can't imagine it not loosening off...

could it be linseed

I guess it could be but the way it was it was just dripping out of there all during the summer, the first night I started sweating it out of there in my oven, I was almost overcome by nausea at the smell and fumes coming out of it, it was very strong. Who the hell knows what it was? I plan on eventually giving it a good soak in BLO when I figure out how I'm going to do it. There was a guy in another forum who used a wallpapering container to soak his in a mixture of (raw) linseed oil and turpentine for x number of hours, then removing it and wiping off the excess.
