williamjoyce: Lord Haw Haw, I presume!
I have here a lovely old 1904 London Small Arms SMLE Mark I * * * which has had precisely that mount added to it. I paid $75 for the rifle, 90% bore included, simply because that is all it is worth with that mod added. You can ask the other guys here what a 1904 London Small Arms SMLE Mark I * * * is worth WITHOUT the Bubba Mount.
Apart from the fact that I don't dare show the beautiful old rifle to any knowledgeable collectors (for fear that I would end up in the tar-pot myself), this conversion is highly unsatisfactory. It is very difficult to do up the scope-ring screws tight ENOUGH to prevent the scope 'walking' forward a tiny bit every time you pull the trigger.... and it is worse the closer you get to full-house loads. This is not really a terrible bother when you're on the range (unless you want to make a decent group, that is) but, if you're hunting, the rifle generally uses your first shot to spit the scope off the rail, forwards. This can really mess up your backup shot, should you need one.
Yes, you can use a little .22 scope on this mount, or you can go the extra few bucks and get a special set of 1-inch rings which will fit it, but the chances are that you'll never be satisfied with the RESULTS of your labours. Much better to do it right, which is actually cheaper. These days, it runs $15 to $20 a hole to D&T, plus your base, plus rings. So that's $60 minimum for the D&T job plus about $15 for the rail plus another $20 for the rings, which makes $95 and you still aren't happy. With the S&K mount, it is $90 for the base plus $20 for rings = $110. For the Gairlochian mount, it is $35 for the mount, $9 for the extra little bases, $20 for the rings = $64.
Looked at in this light, the Gairlochian is the clear winner because it is $31 cheaper than the next-cheapest mounting system. The fact that it DOES THE JOB is just a bonus. Oh, and we must not forget: with the Gairlochian, you don't automatically knock $100 off the resale value of your rifle! So the Gairlochian is actually $131 cheaper than the D&T job that is a PITA most of the time and wrecks your rifle.
Got that?
I have been dealing with these rifles for almost 48 years now, and on both sides of the counter. I think I know what I'm talking about.
