Anyone ever use a Lee Enfield .303 action as the base for a target rifle? Just curious as there is one local for sale converted to a single shot .223 with a heavy barrel.

Thanks

There were numerous LE's converted to 7.62 for target use, and some kept in 303 for same. 22 conversions were around back in the day as well. I've seen LE's converted to 223 before (and 45-70, 444 Marlin, even a couple that had been done to 30-30 and 30-40, god knows why). As to it's suitability as a "target rifle", well, how accurate do you need your target rifles to be? They can be made fairly accurate, but it won't be cheap (even if you do the work yourself), and generally speaking a 223 Stevens would most likely shoot as well or better. FWIW - dan

The good old Lee Enfield is a gem, but a poor choice for a custom build. Try finding a quality scope mount, try finding a stock inletted for one and try shooting a match with the trigger on an LE.

I would use a Stevens 200 before I would use an LE action, and that is saying something.

Thanks. was curious as I seen one local for sale. I have a lee enfield in great condition as my hunting rifle, it make a great hunter and dont plan on messing it up.

Thanks

Yes, many target rifles were made on the #4 action. The attarction was the ability to 'compensate" at long range, so that mediocre military ammo would hold good eleavtion at 900 and 1000 yards.

Here are two rifles that have been re-engineered to go into conventional one piece target rifle stocks. I used a similar one piece #4 at Bisley in 1984 when I shot a record low aggregate score for the week. At long range I only missed the bull twice.
