I'm trying to cobble together a viable load.

Right now I am thinking of going with AA hulls, 209 primers, HS6, and either CB 1114-12 or Windjammer.

Stuff that is in stock and readily available. I know there are better components.

What are you guys using.

AA Hulls, W209 primers, WAA12R, and universal clays wih lee 1oz slug

Fed gold medal Hulls, W209, Fed 12S4, & universal clays

Lead is what ever i have, tried ww, and bags of bird shot melted down.

1oz key drive Lee slug cast from pure WW alloy, water dropped
Federal high brass hulls (don't remember what they're technically called; their 00 buck comes in it, have hundreds from when the police did shotgun training at my range)
CCI 209M
WAA12R wad
2x .125" 20ga fibre wads under the slug in the cup
HS-6

Used a similar recipe with Bluedot but I'm saving my last pound for now.

Where are you guys getting the WAA12R wads? Winchester stopped making these a few years ago. There is another type but I forget the crossover #.

There is still old stock out there to be had. Claybuster wads (CB1114-12) is 1 1/4 oz cross for Win. They are similar but the petals are thicker and some wads produce a bulge with the slugs.

I think http://www.bilozir.net/ might be able to get Win old stock out of the states.

I'm trying to get everything local and at once.

I picked up 4 bags WAA12R as well as 1000 AA and 1000 gold medal hulls on cgn.

put up a wtb for the components you want, im sure some one has them sitting around.

I have played around the the 7/8 lee slug quite a bit, winter is the best time as you can retrieve the wads and shot cards easily in the snow. If the wads are being mangled and losing pedals then something is not correct. The Claybuster wads are poor for the lee slugs, my accuracy and wad release/ damage improved dramatically when I found some old stock Win wads. I use the Win wads in Win AA hulls, with 2, 20 ga shot cards in the bottom of the wad. 27 grains of Unique, and Fed 209 primers.

I also experimented with using the standard fold crimp, and a roll crimp. I had an antique roll crimper laying around and was surprised to find that I had improved results and less wad damage with the roll crimp. I made up a jig and cut the hulls down past the fold crimp, then roll until there is some pressure on the wad, do a quick shake test to make sure they is no movement of the slug in the hull, roll again as needed.

Cheap, low recoil load that is accurate to 100 yards out of a 18.5" smooth bore 870.

I have a bunch of winchester A wads but found with the lee 1oz slug it would sit down too far and can't find shot cards anywhere. I just picked up the clay buster 7/8 wad (cb0178-12) and I seat that and the crimp folded nice. I also trimmed the petals half off. Haven't shot any yet. Any opinions on doing it this way?

The only issue I have heard about those wads is that they can make the hull bulge.

I will be making myself a die to make shot cards. If anyone wants to split an order from Bilozirs let me know.

I ordered some 0.125" nitro cards from trackofthewolf, $28 CD shipped for 1000. Not cheap but only place i could find.

I put one under the slug using waa12r and it crimps ok with my mec9000

This hull has bee reloaded 3 times.

I found most of the CB wads have a small ridge on the inside at the base of the petals that cause them to flare out. I have enough WAA12-F114's to last me a lifetime of slug shooting so I am set.

You can get a cheap set of punches from Princess Auto. Use 3/4" or one size smaller polished out to the size you want. Chuck it up in a drill press and make thousands in no time. Use Matte board, cereal boxes or whatever is the right thickness.

Can also make fibre wads from ten-test or ceiling tile too.

I know this is a dumb question but.... Do you have the press running when cutting cards? I have cut cards with those punches, but I've only ever used a hammer.
