Lee Priming

Lee's priming tools (handheld and press) both list CCI and Winchester as acceptable but say Federal are dangerous.

Is this just a Lee thing?

I'm using Remington primers at the moment and they seem to prime without problem.

if you look on the net you'll find it's supposed to be lee and federal had a falling out years ago, but my local ppc shooters say the federal are softer so i stick with any other brand don't want firecracker experience!!

Apparently Federal primers are softer, so they say. I think it is Lee's way of covering their butts.

I have never had a problem with fed primers, don't worry about it.

I think it's all BS....these two outfits are at odds over something one of them said about the other's products in the press.

I used the hand held primer tool and the ram prime with fed primers, no problem.

I use my lee handprimer and alll brands of primers without any issues.

Lee states in his book that the primers are not bad, just that they are not safe in their press. I do find the Federal primers softer then the Win or CCI ones.

I've loaded a lot of federal match primers through my auto prime hand tool. Never had a problem.

I've loaded 1000's of Federals on the Lee press, zero problems.

I have just read the latest Lee Auto Prime guidance and it doesn't mention Federal anymore, just says that only CCI and Winchester are recommended.

Woodchopper, thanks for the offer, but I'll hang on to my Rem primers and keep loading.

I am about to start loading my first cartridges and I am worried about a primer detonating, probably just a newbie thing. I am loading .223 cartridges and using the Lee 50th. anniversary press ( very basic ) It primes the casings on the downstroke with a little primer lever that pops up. I am using CCI #400 primers. Any comments? Thanks.

I wouldn't be too worried about it. I was using a Lee Loader this summer and only had two primers go off while priming and thats the tool you wack with a hammer. Both were my own fault. That was about 600 rounds ago. Just take it easy and pay attention to what you are doing, both times I was daydreaming when the primer poping brought me back to what I was doing

I just finished priming my first .223 casings. It went like a charm. I just used the Lee press with the safety loader attachment. I just have to add powder and seat and crimp the bullets. I could get addicted to reloading.
