I'm having a hard time getting this bullet to group less than 10" at 50 yards and have try'd different lubes, loading techniques, powders and different charge weights to no avail. I'm using a pedersoli scout 50 flintlock with a 1-32 twist. Anybody here had luck with a load for the 320grn lee R.E.A.L in a 1-32 twist? It shoots poorly with round balls aswell unless I stay under 60grn of 2f. I'm willing to try anything to not have to use sabots, tho it shoots hornady SSTs as well as I can shoot the rifle out to 200y. If I can't find a load that works for the R.E.A.L, the lee improved minie, or PBR who in Canada can rebore and rifle to 54 cal 1-66 for PRB? Thanks in advance

The R E A L. And maxi type bullets like 1:48..the crossover twist where both ball and conical shoot.
Anything faster like 1:32 or 128... Sabots or powerbelt type bullets.
I have a Thompson Center hawken 50 cal 1:48..will shoot conicals
And patch ball, it can shoot a sabot as long as the bullet weight is 240/250gr
Any lighter its a 12" group...if heavier bullet like 300 gr XTP 44cal bullets
I need to back charge from 90gr 2f or pyrodex RS select 2F to 75 gr
To obtain accuracy .that flintlock gun of yours likely will not shoot
A conical very well no matter what...

As far as re boring( rifling ) .im not aware of anyone doing it unless boring smooth
One gent i sold a rifle to bore my 58 out to a 20 gauge smoothbore
Bore was pitted an originally i was going to re sleeve it. Which also
Is an alternative to re rifling... Boring it out to accept a green mountain
Rifled insert and have it soldered or epoxied in place...
May be aftermarket barrels avail for it as well.from track of the wolf
Or dixe gunworks...but not sure how they treat barrels and gunparts
Now with C21 passed

Worst case I can't get a barrel or a blank to thread on the lathe, I may attempt on a older spare 50 cal barrel to drill out the rifling on a lathe, chase with a adjustable reamer to clean it up and order/use a custom rifling button. Seems to be a few company's out there making custom push through buttons. If it comes out OK in the test barrel I may give it a shot. But I'd much rather save the headache and give someone with the tooling the money if there is someone in this country to do it, I know hoyt in the states does it but I'm worried about import/export regs. Anyone do it themselves or know of anyone?

A google search turned up U.S. Barrel Makers for most part, from several forums , general consensus is order
A blank from green mountain if you want an affordable replacement
As colerain and rice or getz barrels get expensive.
Kibler has moved to green mountain barrels with their guns, rice barrels
Prior got expensive and to keep the kits at a price point i was told
They switched to green mountain...id check with ( track of the wolf, or
Dixie gunworks) give them model and serial range, as pedersolis
Changed over the yrs model to model.

Another TC Hawken shooter here, and reading your post with 12" groups had me really confused...It has to be the twist rate not agreeing with the boolit?

it's fairly easy to turn down a existing donor barrels OD to make a liner, it's just time consuming but I think it may be my only option. anyone know who sells or has a 1-66 twist barrel in 50 cal or 54 cal they'd part with?

Ron at nine35.ca sells green mountain barrels if you are looking to replace the barrel try him if you are looking to have the original re bored try Ron Smith in Alberta

Absolutely is the twist. The 1/48 is the threshold where ball and conical stabilize...
Sabots and powerbelts perform better in faster twists..however...as long as the bullet weight
In sabot is around 240/250grain range. Accuracy is plenty gd for a kill shot on a deer in a deer stand
But..best accuracy ive got was patch balls hands down with up to 110gr of 2f goex or pyrodex select RS

Interesting...110 grains is a stout load. On mine I find any more than say 90 grains, and I'm just throwing powder out the barrel to burn. I'll generally use 3F Goex.

I haven't done a lot of work with conicals and none with sabots but I've generally seen 1-48 shoot balls well with lower charges like 60gr and less and shoot conicals well with pretty heavy charges.
1-60 and slower is pretty well just for round ball but I've heard some do okay with really stubby maxi ball like the R.E.A.L.

Got a Thompson Center Long Range Hunter barrel a while ago that I believe is a 1-28 and need to try it out still. I'm hoping that it will work with a maxi or longer bullet but now you have me worried.....
Always need more range time to get to the heart of these questions.
