hey guys, i've seen a lot of threads talking about how to find out which eye is your dominant one, but my question is different :

I am left eye dominant, but i shoot right handed. This is specially a problem comes the time to shoot ARs or long guns in general, because if i hold the rifle on my right shoulder and try to look through the sights with my left eye, it just doesn't work.

So i guess i have to either become right-eye dominant, or a left hand shooter???

What can/should I do?

I've heard of some people put scotch tape over their safety glasses on their left eye and aim with both eyes open. This way, the image created by your left eye is blurred causing you to focus with your right (non-dominant) eye on the image which is clear.

I'm in the same boat as you.
I have bench shot left handed.
Takes a bit to get set up and comfortable, but it all feels and looks great
when I pull the trigger.
Then I collect the targets and the right eye still does a better job for me.
I still can't figure it out.
One thing I have been practising is holding the scope in proper perspective
and opening my left eye as well. I can almost get it to where I can use both eyes.
This forces me to use my right eye with less effort as I can now look out my left and
see things more clear. Then I try and focus using my right eye. I haven't shot 100 yards
with this yet. I tend to do this close range with the 22.
When I can convince myself that I can shoot right eye'd with the left open, I may try the
longer shots. I just don't group as tight with this method. Then again, if an animal is wandering through the thickets, the left eye may play a part in all this.

I'd like to avoid shooting left handed.....It doesn't feel right. Aiming with my right eye feels a lot more comfortable than shooting lefty.

Ca i "train" my right eye in some way?

you can train your eye, I used to be left eye dominant. Then got a thumb in left eye playing playing rugby. My eye was bandaged for over a week, and I used much of my free time to go shooting my pellet gun and play video games. With the patch on for a week, I was forced to focus with my right eye. Got headaches and was weird but now I can switch hit as far as eye focus goes.

Put one hand over your left eye.. stare at something for a solid minute.. take your hand off your eye while still staring. Stare a bit more. then cover your right eye. If you're out of focus, cover you left eye again. You'll actually feel your eyeball shifting slightly, Keep practicing.

Thanks a million injundon, greatly appreciated! I'll get on it

I feel your pain! I am right eye dominant but shoot a pistol left (rifle, right). I am now in the process of converting to shooting with my right hand since I am somewhat ambi. Not an easy transistion, that's for sure but I think it will pay off.

Anyone need a lefty holster for an M&P 9? lol

I just taught myself to shoot left handed but it is a pain to work the bolt that way.I can't use a lefty rifle as I can't work the bolt with my left hand.It is almost use less to work with for me.Took me years to figure out why I could not hit anything and no time at all to learn to shoot lefty.

perhaps an offset scope mount? an inch to the left might help you pich up the scope with your left eye better maybe?

You have the perfect scenario for shooting with a relfex or red dot sight. Your left eye pans the surroundings and that little red dot is superimposed on the target with your right eye. PERFECT, all is not lost. Many or us are in the same boat, a lot of good suggestions posted here.

I'm left eye dominant, and because of a stignatism in my right eye. There is no training that can overcome that condition. I just learned to shoot left with right hand bolt guns. Natural as breathing for me now.

After 16 years of shooting right handed I switched to left. Was is difficult dam right. Took me just about 4 years to get my skeet scores back and i shot a ton to extra lead over those years to get them.
Probally 25 years now since I did it and looking back it was the best thing I ever did. good luck
Oh yes I shoot all right hand guns still

Me, too.

I always close my left eye, and shoot.

Punched my share of sub-MOA targets, and rarely ever have needed two bullets to bring down a critter.

Never have given it a second thought.

I have no idea how anyone can shoot a rifle or shotgun with both eyes open...and I haven't wasted much time trying, either.

:)
