Left Hand Hunting Rifles

Hey all,

Looking for some recommendations on a first hunting rifle. Caveat is it needs to be a lefty - I’m right handed but left eye dominant… I’ll be primarily hunting moose but will also have a bear license (black bear). I’m 6’4 so fairly tall and hoping to find something that will ‘fit’ so to speak. Distances generally 100-200 yards.

Locally my only option is a Tikka T3X lite for ~1,200. Can be found a bit cheaper online but I’d prefer to support local. I’ve only discussed over the phone so it may be negotiable. I figure another couple hundred for a scope and I’m set. Haven’t handled one but a lot of positive reviews. I can get this in .308, 30-06 and 300 win mag.

Somewhat local I can get a Savage 110 Apex Hunter combo for about $900 to my door. This one is in .308.

From the same shop is a Browning X bolt in .270 for 1,300 with a walnut stock. Couple hundred extra I assume for a scope…

Wildcard is Dante’s in Montreal has left hand Ruger M77’s in .270 with scopes for 1,100 and up. Tempting because they have wood stocks which I prefer aesthetically.

Online I can find the same Tikka’s as well as Savage Axis 2 XP models.

In a bit of analysis paralysis so I’m hoping you guys can help me out!

Also lefty, I vote Tikka, great out of the box and good aftermarket. My deer rifle is an old 695 and my predator rig is a T3x

used rem 700 cdl or bdl
savage would be my last pic
ruger 77 used
cal doesn't matter
all standard cal good to 350 yds magnums 550 if shooter is capable
 
Cruise the EE and grab something gently used.

I’m a hardcore REM 700 nut, but I’ve owned lots of 788’s, Savage’s, Sako’s, Ruger 77’s, Ruger American’s, and few Tikka’s.

Don’t rule out stuff like Ruger No 1’s and Browning B-78’s…..

I'm left handed & left eye dominant. Never owned a left handed bolt rifle, though.

Never found it an issue. Wonder if I'm not alone in that department?

tikka is likely best but a Savage will suit you fine

could of easily not went down the LH rifle rabbit hole, but i did, an it does feel amazing- not super natural, as like you, ive grown up with RH rifles..

an honestly, tikkas are no frills, accurate guns.
 
I've got 5 lefty tikkas kicking around here in various configurations. All are incredibly accurate and reliable. I've had other brands (hence my old username) as well as ruger 77 and Americans. Never had any brownings. Tikka will serve you very well. Buy the 308 or 30-06 and you will be covered for life.

I am also right handed and left eye dominant, and I have come to prefer left hand actions in a bolt gun. There are still several right hand bolt action rifles in inventory, including Tikkas, but the lefties are preferred.

Nothing wrong with a Tikka, but take note that without a good recoil pad it will be uncomfortable to shoot in anything like a .30-06 or .300 Win Mag. I had a .30-06 T3 Lite (right hand) but even with a LimbSaver it was uncomfortable when shooting a stout hand load, so I sold it. Moved to a Sako 75 in left hand in the same cartridge.
 
I'm a left as well, I have a couple odd ball rifles. Carl gustaf, their still produced but made by Antonio Zoli. One is in 25-06 with a synthetic stock, and the other is a 300 win mag. Both quality rifles, you can find them sometimes.
 
Don't go short on the scope. Buy quality once, I would reccomend a Leupold 3.5-10x40mm. It's truely a once in a lifetime scope and mount it with good rings. I always liked the Leupold Dual Dovetail mount system... so solid and trouble free. Have a competent smith mount it up.
