A friend of mine has tasked me with finding him a left handed bolt action with a scope for $500. I see the Savage Axis for well under that but have heard they are kind of poopy.
He would like it in .223 to keep his ammo cost down.
I know I may regret saying this but...
Opinions?
 
I picked up a right handed Axis in .223 (should've got a lefty). It (well, I) shot a 3 round group of 0.43" with Federal Fusion 62gr at 100 yards last week. If that's "poopy", then I don't know what to tell you. My only issues are a) I'm a lefty, a lefty bolt would be nicer; b) all Savage Axis rifles are long action, so the bolt throw is longer than it needs to be; and c) the trigger isn't great, and the stock is kinda flimsy. Both of the last issues are easily remedied, either by DIY (it's a $300 rifle), or with aftermarket parts (Boyd's makes stocks for it, and Riflebasix makes a drop in trigger). The Savage 11/111s are apparently pretty good as well.
 
The guy that's looking has a 7mm Rem. Mag. now and want's to get something with a little less oomph and $$$ to practice his skills with.
0.43" at 100 yards is pretty good. I got talking to the guy here that had one and he had very little experience with rifles so that could be part of the problem as well.
I have seen the leftys on line but they don't come with the scope and the price difference is only like $30. I know my friend has fired right his whole life and his 7mm is right so might be best if he buys and practices with a righty.
 
I had the axis in 308. The triggers are more like 7.5lbs, but if you go on youtube there is a simple mod by replacing the spring not cutting the existing one.
I added weight to mine because at 6 lbs I found it to jumpy. I didn't think they made a left hand version(i'm LH), if they did I was going to buy one in 270.
The rugger american comes in left hand.

Tell him to save up another $80 + tax and get the Savage Trophy Hunter XP package. I was in the same boat last year and that's what I ended up with. Either that or the left handed axis, but by the time you put a decent scope and rings on it you're up to the price of the package anyway, and you miss out on the accu-trigger.
 
I had a little Savage 11FL, that I regret selling.
Shot 60gr. Vmax's, over Benchmark very well.
