hey everyone. My son is turning 8 this summer, and I was thinking it's about time to find him his first centerfire rifle, probably a .243. Now he's a big kid (5 feet tall at age 7.5), but still he's only 7 and not strong enough to hold up a full sized rifle. Trouble is, he's left handed, and shoots his .22 left handed - we tried right and it just doesn't work for him. lastly we live on the west coast of Vancouver island, so stainless is a must...

So, I'm looking for a bolt action, stainless, left handed, compact rifle in .243... What are my options? Anyone make such a thing? Closest I've found is the browning compact lefty x-bolt, but I don't see them in stainless.

thanks!

good luck it is like finding an unicorn ...

the browning compact with a wood stock and blued is your only option unless you re going on semi custom and the price wont be the same at all ...

feel your pain as a lefty ...

My boy is right handed but is almost completely blind in his right eye so I've been training him to shoot left handed.

I'm into the now hard to find single shot switch barrel stainless steel T/C Contender carbines that can be shot left or right handed.

My boys setup (he's turning 8 tomorrow) right now is a shortened butt stock with a 16.5" barrel in 22LR.

I also have a 21" 410 barrel and his first centerfire for learning to shoot heavier recoil is an 18" 10mm barrel.

I also have a 21" 223 barrel for coyotes and 21" barrels in 7-30 Waters and 35 Rem for deer/bear when he can handle the heavier recoil.

My older son grew up with these same rifles he is now into bolt action rifles for hunting.

What about a ruger scout rifle. The 308 model if your hunting or the .223 for plinking. If you reload then the 308 can be loaded down nicely

Ellwood Epps has Tikka T3 Lite LH in stainless/243 in stock currently. Site sponsor and great quality rifle. P&D has them in stock as well.

I'm a lefty as well and have shot right handed guns (left handed fashion) all my life. Shotguns, rifles, semi's, pumps, bolts. I've thought of buying left handed guns, but I'm so used to the right handed versions that I think I'd be lost! A little powder in the face now and then never hurt anyone...

Thanks for the suggestions guys - keep em coming! I like the thought of a ruger, so I'll check them out. I'm not a huge savage fan, but might be worth checking out as a kid's first gun that will undoubtedly get knocked over or dropped at some point... I'm not sure what to make of the tikkas yet. I would like the rifle to be a short action, so the thought of a short action cartridge in a long action just doesn't make sense to me... I would likely go with a blued gun like the browning micro midas or the like first.

Cheers,
Jack
