Left or Right - does it matter?

I don't know how in the hell lefties can even SHOOT a right handed rifle. How do you cycle the bolt? With your left, over the top? With the right, and support the gun with your left?

If you're a lefty, get a damn LH rifle!!!!

The bolt is where it is for a good reason - it is easier to use a left-handed rifle on your left side and a right-handed rifle on the right side. If it didn't make a difference, there would be right-handed rifles with the bolt on the left.

That being said - I have many more righty guns than lefties. Never turn down a chance to shoot a right-handed firearm because of your leftiness. ;)

As lefties, we learn to adapt to the other side of the world, like using scissors made for righties, having your fly open on the wrong side :D and so on. So we really are very adept at using wrong way stuff.
And yup, we just reach on over with the left hand to cycle the bolt. No big deal, I'm just trying to weigh the pros and cons.

an awful lot of us started out with lee- enfields and 98 mausers- back then you could get a 98 for 49.95, and a lee enfield was 25 bucks or so for a number 4- as far as cylcling it goes, with the rifle braced firmly to the shoulder, you reach over the pistol grip and grab the bolt with the fourth and pinkie fingers- then pull up and cycle just like a rightie, using the heel of the hand- btw, 50 bucks back then was a heck of a lot of money- and all the 'shells we could get were cil dominion- from woodwards or eatons- the bay was overpriced and wouldn't sell to 15-16 year old kids- even if they knew how to shoot

no doubt a product of the right handed system of schools- i write righthanded ( perhaps that's why it's so poor) but everything else is left- i'm by far left eye dominant too-

Hmm, good point. Sorry son, my rifle is set up for a lefty and you're a righty so it just wouldn't work for you !
in this case, i'd get him his own gun just as soon as he was old enough or get a righty cheapie - besides, that was he has the responsibility of ownership and has to learn to clean it, etc- the only thing i might share would be the ammo- beleive me, once he gets old enough , the gun he learned on won't be good enough for some reason or other (even though it works perfect) and he'll get something else

Actually, #1 & only son is 24 yrs. old and is trying to make a sweetheart deal on a 30-06 Sako from his boss so he might end up with a "better" gun than me, tho I've got a lot more guns than him ! He really is envious of my 30-30 and 410's tho. :)

-for some reason i thought we were talking about a kid- don't know how i got that drift- YOU get what suits YOU- at 24 he should be getting his own toys anyway- if you're worried about the inhereiting thing, let him worry about it - you get what suits you now-and besides you're probably of sufficent age that you need to "treat " yourself- lord knows i wish i had , several times along the way-

I shoot left but I am right handed, I write with my right. I always used rh rifles, until one day I was in a local gun shop and found an old savage 110 lh with the barrel messed up I bought for $50 and had a 22-250 installed and never looked back, I have 6 firearms and they are lh or singleshot or lever. I will never buy a rh rifle again unless it's a great deal. But you should use what feels right

Same here.:D

On a lighter note, any left handed information gets processed by the right side of the brain, so it could be said that only left handed people are in their right mind... ;) :D

I do every thing with my right except fire a firearm or draw a bow,go figure:confused:.I own a remington 700 BDL LH.My wife is a true lefty but shoots a model 7,and of course I have yet to find a left handed one.

Is it really worth it to go silly sided?
Will the resale value, if I ever sold it, be less as the demand may be less?
Thanks.
If you shoot iron sights ... shoot on the "same" side as your dominant eye.

Well, based on the advice of my learned Gunnutz's, that's exactly what I just picked up today - 30-06. "Pre owned" in very, very nice condition.
My very first lefty gun, maybe now I can hit the target. :(
Thanks again folks for all the help and advice.
