Left or right???

Well, I guess I'm gonna find out! Been using right handers all my life. I have wanted a lefty for quite a while, but didn't think I'd be able to switch over at this late date! Anyway, a gun shop in Brandon on the way home from the recent gun show, just happened to have a beauty X-Bolt in 7mm-08 in left hand on the shelf! I wanted a Shortrax oil finished so bad, but none in the entire country, not a one! So, I took that lefty home with me! I must admitt, it doesn't feel right with that bolt away over there on the far side! Got the Leupold bases and a Leupold scope, just need super low Leupold rings! Next trip to the big bad city!

I agree with you there but it's also safe to say that there's inherent danger in everything we do in our daily lives. I wouldn't want to have a blow up with any action type, left or right.
Left hand firearms haven't been around all that long in the grand scheme of things. When was the first LH bolt rifle made? Ten years ago? Twenty? I don't know, but I do know there was no such thing when I first started shooting in the '60's.
Although they are becoming more common, certainly they aren't plentiful by any means. Better late than never though, as I'm at least looking into making the switch.

I thank you for the information. I had no idea they were made that long ago. Oddly enough, although LH rifles are becoming more popular all the time, are still not common by any means, at least not in northern Saskatchewan.

I grew up using RH bolts to and last year I got my first LH bolt and I love it. It took a bit of getting used to but it didn't take long. I still use RH bolts as well and I don't have any trouble switching between the two. When you love to shoot, you just love to shoot anything.

I am a lefty and have used both lh and rh guns. I would stick with rh, they are cheaper, parts are available anywhere, the parts are cheaper and there is no disadvantage. In fact a lefty can often run a rh gun easier than a righty.

So much around this is personal preference. One guy prefers the RH rifles, usually because that's what he's used and is familiar with, another, like myself, prefers the LH models. Growing up, I could never stand hunting with RH bolt actions, and as a result usually hunted with designs that lent themselves well to ambidextrous use. Later on I finally purchased a LH M77 MII 25-06 and have never really looked back. For the OP, I would suggest getting one and trying it. I expect you will like it, as most southpaws who use LH rifles long enough to overcome old muscle memory, do.

There is one issue with the statement quoted, the section bolded is not true. From a safety stand point, in the instance of a case failure, (not likely, but possible for a number of reasons.) a LH bolt action is designed to protect a LH shooter much better. Having experienced a massive case head failure while shooting a bolt action rifle, I can say that I'm glad it was behind a LH model...
