Left/Right Alignment with ARMS 18

Had some issues getting my arms 18 to align correctly, hoping someone has a better solution than using a staple.

I've installed and reinstalled my arms several times now, and it always wants to point a few degrees left from center. At best, I can get it to where max windage will put my on target, and that's after aligning right, anchoring the back dovetail point, then lightly tightening the side bolt. If I tighten the side bolt to spec, it pulls the mount left.

After digging around a bit, I found someone who used a staple to shim the mount over. I tried it, and it pulled the mount back to damn near exact dead center.

My question is, is there a better way of shimming or grinding this mount to get center, or should I just leave that staple in there and call it a day?

Did you remove the c clip on the inside of the mount that holds the main bolt in place ?
If not remove that and I am pretty sure your problem will go away.
 
The M-14 Doc commented that he always removes it. My alignment improved as well as the one sgmackin has after removing our clips. Both of our scopes were off to the left .
 
Yup, I followed the install instructions, then thought, "Hey, that don't look right!" It was off to the left, but I thought "meh, must be normal". I glassed it anyway, then set off to the range. Had to CRANK the windage over big time to get it zeroed.

It wasn't until someone posted pics of their own crooked mount that I realized mine looked the same. So off came the mount, off came the C-clip, and on went the mount again. Now it looked like it should have in the first place. Of course, this meant my scope was no longer zeroed, which meant there was much swearing to get it rezeroed at Petawawa this past weekend.

There is a thread buried on here some where from M14Doctor, which details his mounting procedures...but it's not a sticky so use your search-fu wisely.

That's the thread I went off. The "stapled" mount got me on target in the center of my windage adjustment, but did shift around a bit after about 50 rounds.

The ultimate solution will be grinding something to fit better. Maybe I'll get some chalk to see what's fitting well and what's binding.
