Been thinking about getting a pistol in a relatively 'big' calibre, like .45 ACP so I can shoot the he double toothpicks out of it. Might be more economic to get a 9mm, especially if I don't reload. Another thing I'm left handed, is the Norinco 1911 A1 knockoffs good? Does anything need to be changed to make it 'better' for a lefty?

all you need on the 1911 is the ambi safety-everything else can be manipulated by the trigger finger-it was actually designed for left hand use( although some will dispute this) as the saber was the priciple weapon at the time and carried in the right paw- both the 1873 colt saa and the 1911 share this concept- so yes any 1911, or clone thereof will do-

I'm a leftie & have owned 1911 style pistols for many years. Install an ambi-safety if you must but none of my 1911's currently have one. Just don't see it as a disadvantage. 'Course if one came from the factory with an ambi-safety installed I wouldn't change it out.

I do have a couple of factory pistols in .40 S&W cal... a BHP MkIII and a S&W 4006... both sport factory ambi-safeties.

If you want a nice 1911 style in 9mm get a Norc NP-29 [or like Halger says get two!] then send them to Gunnar at Armco for 'smoothing'... And then you'll be 'good to go'...

I'm with NAA. I shoot lefty with my norc 1911C and prefer the original safety. With a little bit of practice you can manipulate it with your trigger finger quite easily.

Not that I use the safety much anyway.

The only problem I've ever had is with extended slide releases inadvertantly getting knocked up by my trigger finger. Then again I do have sausage fingers. The original release doesn't give me issues.

The mag release is easy to manipulate with your trigger finger.

I opted for a USP45 with the LEM. Now I have no safety to worry about and the trigger pull on the first shot isn't horrendous!

Beretta 92/96 series comes with ambi-safety and mag release that can be switched sides. Just a thought from one lefty to another...
