Good day to all,

I'm currently looking to buy my first pistol. I'm a left handed shooter. The CZ 85 combat seems to be a good choice but I do have a question wrt the magazine release. It is set for right handed shooter. Is it easy to change it for a left handed shooter?

Another option I'm looking at is the H&K P30, they already have most of the ambi control.

Any opinions on my primary question? and my options?

Thanks!

As far as I know, the current CZ85 Combat pistols use the same style mag catch as the Shadows and SP-01 variants - in which case, it's simple to reverse it.

I am a lefty and I own both the CZ 85 and HK P30l. I have a stainless steel cz85 and also bought the conversion kit. It is reliable and good for lefties. Reliable, accurate and good looking. The only thing I would critique is the quality of the stainless as it seems to peel off where there is friction. My gunsmith took care of the problem. Still, I recommand the combat version... But it is left friendly and the main reason why I bought it. I just love the safety under my thumb as I shoot. It just seems more stable for the follow up shot. It is the one I use the most for plinking and warm-ups.

The h&k is more left friendly as all is ambidextruous plus the decocker at the rear CZ doesn't have a decocker.. The mag release is different and requires (for me) practice but I love it more and more as I practice. The grip is fantastic and the ambi decocker is something that I like too for IPSC competition. The only critique is that the mags and parts are suppose to become more and more difficult to get in Canada (what I have heard on gunnutz from a supplier). HK are expensive for what you get. Just a little more to get a costum 1911.

Some people hate the h&k trigger. Again, at first I hated it but got used to it with training. If you can afford, the hk is a better option for me. I just love it period. It is cool to handle and the grip suits me better than the CZ. Noir as a very good review on youtube. I have the h&k p30L. There is also a longer version. Both are accurate and have adjustable sights. If you are interested in 1911, some models have ambidextruous safetys and mag release. I have the Kimber gold match and again, just love it and left friendly. Everything I buy has to be lefty friendly as much as I can. Some people argue that it is advantageous to fire a right handed rifle, shotgun or handgun when you are a lefty. If that was true, all weapons would be left handed for all the right handed shooters. All my carreer I trained and shot with right handed pistols, rifles and automatic weapons. I got used to the mag release on the left side. Now that I tasted left handed rifles, shotguns and handguns, there is no turning back. Everything I own or buy needs an ambidextruous feature. Hope this helps.

Thanks all for your comments, very interesting. I have shot a H&K 30 and got it about the trigger long pull. From what I could understand of CZ reviews, the trigger is much more crisp if you compare it to the H&K trigger. Does the H&K $200-300 premium over CZ is worth? This question and the trigger difference are the two questions I will have to answer before making my decision.

Hey, may not be what you're looking for but from a fellow lefty check out the Maximus 1911 Left-handed Gladiator in 45 ACP. I'm looking for my first semi-auto handgun and seriously thinking about it. They have one currently at Wanstalls and it looks like an interesting handgun. Oh and by the way most revolvers are lefty-friendly!! Also, figure out if you are left or right eye dominant and shoot accordingly. I'm a lefty (actually a bothy I'm ambidextrous) but I shoot a bit better with my right hand because I'm right eye dominant. Good luck with your shopping.

Sorry, you must dry fire both. If you can't, I would prefer the H&k. But the margin is thin. Flip a coin and whatever will be a good choice. I wish I couls help you more. I bought both of them.

Just when I tought I had everything I needed. Just when I told my wife... This is the last one... It was love at first sigth. I now have to get one. Are the small caliber available for Canadian laws (barrel lenght). Also, some people are talkimg about IPSC in 22lr. Will you develop a good combat style 22lr? I beleive that your catalog is very well made and you positioned yourself very well on the market with the 9mm 1911. Some purists will say that 1911 should only be in 45ACP. I am not a purist and there are many like me who like this caliber. Congrats for your company. I hope you take more market % in
Canada.

Good day to all,

I'm a lefty. I have had a CZ85, and an M&P9 and finally bought a Walther PPQ three months ago. My buddy has 3 Sigs. I've shot all three.

Do yourself a favor, go hold a Walther. Break the trigger. Buy it. It blows all the others out of the water. Period. End of discussion. It has the best ergonomics and best trigger bar none.
To get the kind of trigger that the Walther has you will have to spend a lot of money and do all kinds of mods and the Walther out of the box will shoot better.

The reset on the Walther will amaze you. No other hand gun has such an awesome trigger. Go to Utube and see.

The only reason people buy Sigs is because the U.S. Navy SEAL's use them and Sig markets that to the max.

My buddy has a Sig P220 .45 and two Sig P226's He bought all three because of the reason stated above. They don't shoot that good. All three triggers are rough and grindy. He's spent huge dollars on sights and trigger mods.

The Walther is totally, 100% ambidextrous.
Get the Walther, you won't be disappointed.

As a lefty I still chose to not switch the mag release on 2 of my pistols. I actually flipped it over on one and then put it back! I do use "both" slide releases, but the reality is with most of the pistols, it is easy to use the slide lock with your left index finger if you practice a bit and it doesn't get used much anyways. However, I do use the ambi safety exclusively as a lefty.

You really need to dry fire and play with the controls with your hands in the ready position. You may find a gun you thought or heard you might like is not for you!

After much reflexion, reading and visiting gun stores I finally made my decision. Thanks to all who have put their 2 cents in, all inputs were valuable and I read all your comments with great attention.
I have to say that my initial options were quite good but I will end up buying the Walther PPQ which was proposed by one of the member of this board (shikano53, thanks again for your opinion!).
The Walther grip is absolutely outstanding and I like the way it is balanced in my hand. All controls are ambi and the magazine release is "HK like i.e level". It is German and seems very well made.
