Hey guys,

Just on canadaammo.com and i saw that they have shotguns with really short barrels that are non-restricted. can anyone explain this? Is there no minimum barrel lenth for shotguns?

Thanks,

J

Ok to be fair, the search function is not the greatest and although this has definately been beaten to death plenty of times I will indulge in the question.

For manual action shotguns i.e. pump/hinge/bolt, the barrel length can be as short as you want with the gun remaining non restricted AS LONG AS it follows these two conditions:
a) factory made
b) the over length of the gun remains 26" or greater.

Now if you want a shorty and decide to chop your own barrel you can ONLY cut it to 18" AS LONG AS the over all length remains greater than 26"

semi's are another issue which I am not sure about but I believe the barrel length has to be factory 18.5" with over all length at 26" or greater

You can cut a semi to 18.5" if you want, OAL still to be 26". If it is manufactured with a shorter barrel it is a restricted gun, but still legal.

Here's a quote from this page:

You may be forced to defend the legality of what you have, or have done, in a court of law -- at heavy expense -- because some police officer does NOT understand all the above technicalities. You may even be convicted -- because some JUDGE does not understand firearms law.

That kinda sucks. You buy a "legal" unrestricted shotgun then might get arrested because they don't know the law?

I wanted to buy a Dominion arms short barrel shotgun but I'm not sure anymore.
