I'm hoping that someone can point me in the right direction: I need to find out if the same caliber restrictions (.275 maximum) that apply to hunting in southern ontario also apply to pest control?

A friend of mine has asked for my help in dispatching a groundhog on his farm, and I would like to find out if using my .308 would be against regulation.

Any help appreciated!

Yes, you are confined by the caliber restriction.
If by "pests" you mean doing nuisance animal control, then you are hunting, and the regulations apply.
If there is no season on what you intend to hunt/shoot you can help him, if it does have a season, and he is shooting them out of season to "protect his property" you can not participate unless you are an immediate relative or are licenced by the MNR to act as his agent. This does not apply to deer or black bear.

depending on the county you are in , i know bruce county dosent have a caliber restriction but if you are in huron and surrounding county's south i believe the max caliber is a .270

"...also apply to pest control?..." Yes.
It's not all of Southern Ontario. Just some Counties West of, but including Wellington County. Some Municipalities, mostly around TO, say nothing bigger than .270. The Western Counties say .275. It isn't the actual calibre though. As in a .270 Win is fine, despite its .277" bullet. There's a list of the Counties in the Hunting regs, under Small Game. The whole thing is daft as hell.
There's no season for ground hogs. However, ground hogs are true hibernators. They'll be off to bed for the winter soon and won't be out until Spring. You do need a small game hunting licence.
