legal seal hunting

Not at all. Its a lot of fun, and very challenging in open water. Think of em as giant aquatic gophers. :D

Awesome thread. I always kinda prized the seal hunt as our 1 unCanadian middle finger to the world. I never wanted to try it but now I definitely do. Not too many of em in Alberta though....

yes-in fact, reminds me of stories my grandfather would tell by the fire. Ice floes full of chirping baby seals just two hours north of Edmonton.

and how we, as children, would relax by the fire atop one of his many seal skin blankets. Those will forever remain in our family- a reminder of all thats left of the once bountiful Alberta seal.

@sealhunters - super interesting that seals are federal and not provincial. How time consuming/costly is it really to get that paperwork done?

You need a PAL and hunters education course, like for hunting anything, and 1-2 hours of your time to attend a course. Get the form to take to the DFO office, have proper ID and pay $5.65.

Pretty simple.

But you need a proper killing instrument other than a rifle, hakapik or hardwood club.

From what I know about the East coast seal hunt, the people their do it as a needed part of their income. I've never even heard of anyone sport hunting seals. I'm not against hunting, but standing on an ice flow in the cold shooting at seals sounds like as much fun as chewing broken glass.

Buy me a seal hunt and I'll break all the glass you can chew.

how is that any different from late season deer hunters sitting in a tree stand/blind for hours on end or waterfowl hunters bobbing up and down in a boat freezing their butts off? if we all had the same interests and thought the same the world would be just a tad boring.

it's been nearly 5 years since my last jar of canned seal. anyone have some extra kickin around? :D
