if i went to the states and bought myself a beta mag (100 round ar mag) and either dissasambled it and brought it back had it pinned to five round and brought it back or one of the two above and mailed it back would i be breaking any laws.
From what i heard dissasembled high cap mags are not illegal only when there assembled

if they are in parts customs WILL sieze them you wont get them back

if they are pinned customs probably will sieze them

its a gamble either way not to mention you need the U.S exprt permits or us customs/ATF may keep you as a guest......

as for mags taken apart in canada dont risk it my guess is by the time you got before the judge the "parts" mag would have assembled itself into a prohibited magazine....

From what I've seen of the Beta mags, I'm not sure how you could pin the tower to block the follower from going lower than 5 rounds and still travel up again. You'd almost have to make up a dummy floorplate and use a regular AR-15 spring.

Possession is legal. Importing parts is not.

Ok...here's a question that no one has ever explained to me. How do new standard/high cap mags get in legally? I mean new rifles are being legally imported all the time (sig, CZ, ect). How do the mags for them get here?

Dealers that bring them in have the ablity to possess prohibited weapons and devices under their dealers licence. Depending upon what is stated on there licence.

Oh, ok. I've always assumed that importers had to work with their suppliers to have the mags pinned befor import. The CZ 58 mag I have looked pinned before sent here, seeing as the pin's are painted over like the mags.

They may well be pinned before being shipped. However mags from the US (AR mags) are not pinned prior to shipping. Places like Wolverine and TSE do LE sales which means they are licensed for prohibited devices such as full cap mags and/or select fire firearms.

Rebel rouser is correct. Dealers import the magazines as ful capacity(prohibited) magazines. Upon arrival they are then pinned to 5 rounds.

According to the CFO Ontario there is no provision in the Firearms Act that allows for anyone (and that includes licensed dealers) to convert a prohibited magazine to a legally pinned magazine. When we import high cap magazines we have to account for each and every one... showing that they went to end-users legally allowed to possess and purchase them. We CAN NOT pin the magazines and sell them to civilians.

Magazines that have been properly "pinned" prior to entering Canada are legal for importation and civilian sales.

Further to that... the US State Department will not approve Export Permits for high capacity magazines unless they are for Law Enforcement and/or Military end-users.

The mag have to be modified before it is entering Canada. You cannot enter Canada with a high cap magazine tube or body without having it modified.
