Hey gun nutz,

I have come into a unique situation and I want advice and clarification. I have purchased a factory 15" 500S&W TC encore barrel. I plan on putting it on a pro hunter receiver and rifle butt stock.
My question is the legal issues surrounding a 15" barrel and Canadian Gun laws. I have my RPAL so not worried per say, just want to know the details of possible options.

Hypothetical 1- 15" barrel, full rifle stock= Non restricted very small rifle.
Hypothetical 2- 15" barrel style of grip/stock that is pistol grip but total length over 26" total
Hypothetical 3- 15" barrel, pistol grip= restricted even though its kind of a rifle and factory produced.

I have a mares leg, 12" barrel, factory produced, under 26" still NR, factory prdiced things have differnt rules and we have Greay areas the size of vancouvers grey rainy ass clouds. All the TC encore parts are factory but it could be under 26". This is why I ask, Im reading though the legal stuff, trying to clarify the issues and options as this is a unique beast

Possible plans are rifle stock, scope= tiny 500S&W cannon mortar, OR what I really want is the Haus of Arms crusher style pistol grip, but still want a NR gun.

No wrong answers, Kind want to stir the pot but still figure out what is legal in this situation.

Barrel came up on a trading page, I just could not resist. I will be hunting with it, will make a good moose bear deer gun for when I want to carry something a little different. It will also make a great kaboom stick with 15'' ported barrel, might singe the brows a bit but all in good fun.

number 1. full rifle stock will be its first configuration as a hunting rifle around 30" total length.
number 2. is where it is....a great Canadian grey area. The "crusher loop" grip (link in above post) on an encore "rifle" would be very close to 26" overall length making it non restricted and the biggest "handgun" for hunting in Canada.
number 3. might come to fruition is I get a concussion from the muzzle blasts after the first box of ammo.

I had an encore rifle with a 20” 7-08 barrel and a 15” 308 barrel during the registry days. Non restricted on my paperwork. I bought a 12” 44 mag barrel from a good member here. Called up to add it to my registration slip. They asked for me to measure it parallel to the plane of the barrel from the muzzle to the end of the stock. It came in at 26.2”. They added it as non-restricted. Fvck, that thing as loud. ;)

I have an Encore in 223, 44Mag and .375 WCF in 14" barrels but it is my understanding that Encore won't fit on Pro-hunter frames. I believe the pin to breech length is different.

OOOPS! Me bad! Mine is a Contender,,,,

Perfectly legal non-restricted with 15" in Canada if factory made barrel that length - but not in the States. Changed my registration to reflect my 15" 45-70 barrel back when we had the gun registry. I spoke with the CFC tech then and they issued another registration for it. You can have the one frame and a 100 barrels for it so I decided to register with the shortest I would use. This is my rifle as registered;

As long as the rifle is long enough, it will be NR.

The question becomes what your length is with that funny grip...

If it is restricted with that grip, you have a period (30 days I believe) in which to register it, you can't use it unless it's registered. If you decide to change it back to NR once registered it'll require verification I think. If you decide to change it back to NR before 30 days are up, and you haven't registered it, you can just pretend like it never happened.

I have emailed haus of arms to see what they say but with the grip I highly doubt it will be 26" as a 12'' barrel rifle stocked measures in at 26..." a 15" barrel will be
29''. But as a rifle Im super stoked on it, short, powerful and its easily customizable with beautiful wood. It will be matched with a 1.5-5 vx3 and Ill be sure to post photos. Maybe a new thread, "the littlest boom sticks".

Yeah it sounds like fun little toy!

One of these days I totally want to get something like this. My 18" single shot 12ga is a hoot, I bet this would be even better!

Until a few days ago I had no idea these were in Canada. I will be making it a rifle first then seeing whats possible for a legal hunting "handgun". Its such a unique gun it will be fun however it goes boom. If anyone is selling barrels like this I will buy them.....all of them........

What kind of velocity you getting with that boom stick, Bob must like that one
Right at 2000fps chronographed with 325gr FTX using H4198 - featured a time or two on Bob's blog (mental preparation to manage recoil). Had it out deer hunting a few times in Haliburton years back but never had a chance to pull the trigger.

With a factory buttstock and factory barrel the overall length doesn't matter, ie your Ranch Hand.

If you put a pistol grip on it to make an Encore pistol it becomes prohibited, not restricted.

The only way you can do that legally is to register it as a pistol, it then becomes restricted and you can only use it at the range and you cannot turn it back to non-restricted at a later date.

I've got the same configuration in 223. Great fun, but fierce muzzle blast. I'm planning to work up some efficient loads that burn all the powder inside the barrel. It lives in a violin case from Salvation Army thrift.

I keep the OAL legal, and don't even own the pistol grip. Even the available folding stocks could be a problem.

Nice rigs the TC's be. I love the barrel change feature & solid build of the Encore action. I went the Rossi RH route meself though as I'm a lever fan.;)
(Earlier pic) These 2 now wear XS peep sights.

I'm into T/C Contender carbines have three 14" barrels in 45 Colt - 375JDJ - 45-70 overall length is appr 29" so the OP putting a 15" barrel onto a longer Prohunter frame will be even longer.

As long as your Prohunter frame is a rifle frame and not a handgun frame it is legal to use it anywhere it is legal to shoot a non-restricted single projectile firearm.

45-70 G2 Contender

Nice little thumpers Camp Cook. Hard to find Contender frames and barrels in Canada at any reasonable price point. Do you find the G2 frame a significant improvement?
