This is a start up thread, hopefully to be stickied to push for the removal of suppressors or ''sound moderators'' from prohibited list. Lets get the ball rolling, we as firearms owners need to realize the strength we have as a community. Please chime in with ideas and suggestions to get this started!

I think the first thing to do would be to get the laws from the countries where they are legal and find out the reasons they allow them such as reducing hearing loss, noise pollution, etc.

I'm all for this. Aren't they used in some European countries for hunting and possibly NZ? Have the Gov't generate more cash from us and tax (stamp) them like the US. I wouldn't mind paying for it (we always do!).

please keep the comments to suppressors only mag limits are a seperate issue. we have a legitiment safety concern of hearing loss and that will be a very strong stance by which to justify suppressor use, even if tax stamp fees have to be applied to them. Mag limits has it's own issue so lets try and stay focused, one step at a time

I agree about the sound suppressors. Whenever we are up at the hunt camp either moose or deer hunting, we often take breaks for lunch or sometimes quit hunting early in the day because he harvested a deer quickly. When we go back to the camp, we like to go grouse hunting if we have a spare hour or two. We don't like the idea of making alot of gunfire noise when we are not deer or moose hunting, so we use a .22LR rifle, and if we had a sound suppressor, that would be much better.

There are also times that I'm at a friends farm who happens to have a few houses that are quite close together in the Countryside, and when we go in his back yard to practise shooting with the .22LR's, we do create alot of noise that must be annoying to listen to if your a closeby neighbour, and a sound suppressor on a .22LR would eliminate the unwanted noise.

Yes they are, I used them on my rapid7's when i lived in the UK.

Crazy laws we have in Canada.

I miss my silencers :(

I'm for this.

You could also mention how urban sprawl is causing ranges to be closed down due to noise complaints. Happened all over the Lower Mainland(North Van and Burnaby).

I've mentioned this before but some "Sound expert" s**t all over me for not knowing what I was talking about but I'll say it again. Looking at firearm sound Db levels of a .308, online lab results of some sort, and the reduction provided by a suppressor, we can't call them a SILENCER it spreads baby killing fears amongst Lib's and Dipper's, listed on the AAC was still louder than a .22lr .

It's an argument that can be supported by science and not just logic which is what most the rest of our firearms laws would have to be based on, IMO.

A supressor might not completely negate the need for hearing protection, which could also help the cause.

They just took away the type 97 for ??? yea no reason they banned those 25 round mags now??? yea no reason I mean why can I have a ruger 10/22 with a 25 round but not a 25 rounder in a 22 that looks like an AR ....I don't get it??? I think you would have a better chance of increasing the magazine limit or rate of fire before you would ever get a suppressor legalized in Canada .... I got to fire a AK-47 with a 30 rd on vacation and then I came home and went to the range with my CZ-858 and I tell you 5 round mags really suck. lol lets get that changed I mean whats the real reason for allowing only 5 rounds?

Its very important to NOT make arguments like this. My guess is that they will limit rim fire mags if we make this argument.

We have to be careful with making statements about suppressors. We do not want to make our sport worse for us.

Some one said that If we said it may be a health concern then they would make so you have to ware hearing protection. Well wearing hearing protection while hunting is dangerous. You can't hear if someone else is walking up the trail. Also if our guns are loud and we are forced to ware hearing protection then how do we force bystanders to ware them when we are shooting?

Just some ideas. They might need work/ rewriting but I figured I would throw them out there.

Here are the links I found for hearing programs in Canada.

Hearing pro should always be encouraged, but nothing is perfect, a ''sound moderator'' is just another level added to that safety equation, imagine being able to speak over then consistant gun fire at ranges. Calling a cease fire will be heard quicker and audible. The youths and first timers, more senstive to the loud bang and crack of a firearm going off, will be less ''gun shy'' suppressors dont silence a gun, they give the option of lessening the noise polution, resulting in a safer sport for everyone.

that'll be very helpful to our case! UK has some pretty strict gun laws, as i understand it (i'm far from an expert so please chime in if you know for sure) but do allow the ownership of suppressors. Another feather in our cap.

Statistics from the Hearing Foundation of Canada.

-The cost of hearing loss to the Canadian economy could be in the tens of billions of dollars. A 2006 Australian study estimated that costs to that nation’s economy from hearing loss amounted to CAD$10.6 billion per year. On a per capita basis, this could mean a Canadian equivalent of almost $18-billion per year.

To bad that info wasn't more soild. If that is true that is crazy.

I think we have bigger fish to fry before we start pushing for this (even though I'm all for it). Let's get rid of the registry, get our magazines put back to factory capacity, etc first.

My 16" barreled CZ 452 came with a threaded barrel, I sure as hell wish I could use those threads for their intended purpose. I imagine shooting .22lr would be pretty quiet and .22CB longs would likely be much more silent than that.

not to down play the importance of those issues, but i think this has some good legs which to stand on. Any advancement in the firearms community is a battle won in the proverbial war.

I wouldn't want to push too hard on this issue though, what if they decided that all the arguments we put forward are grounds to make suppressors mandatory?

"...suggestions to get this started..." Lie down until the thought goes away. Suppressors are very long way down the priority list.
"...so we use a .22LR..." Use an air rifle or a non-firearm air pistol.
