i keep hearing we have to have our 10,20, and 30 round clips pinned to 5.im in alberta and the retailers ive talked too and this includes at the new bass pro shop say that if its only for target shooting the clip does not have to be pinned.does anybody in alberta know for sure that we can only use a clip capable of holding 5 shots even if its strictly for target practice?

of course i have a pal.i always thought it was limited to five, but why is a guy who works the gun counter telling me there is no limit to clip capacity for my sks if its used for target only.he told me this yesterday at the bass pro shop.i only posted this question to see if i was missing something.i will be going out there by the weekend to tell what i think of him.

Ar's are allowed 10. Garands are allowed 8. Few other exceptions to the rule. Read up.

Specifically: ARs are allowed use of a LAR 15 pistol magazine. No rifle magazine used in an AR may hold more than 5 centrefire cartridges. The Garand is specifically exempted due to the design of it's magazine requiring the use of the 8 round en bloc clip.

for SKS , the mag is pinned to 5rds and you can take that to the brass pro shop .

Albertans are crazy red necks that don't listen to the government.

i thought of that because im from new brunswick now living in alberta.thought maybe they just dont like to follow fed rules.the store only opened five days ago so im thinking the cleck knows nothing about guns or the laws that go with them.this was not just any store cleck that told me this.he was on the gun counter.:

Hey! New Brunswick has its share of rednecks, too!:D

Like the others said, semi auto centrefire - 5 rounds maximum, unless a mag from a pistol or bolt action also happens to fit in it, or it is a Garand.

Welcome to CGN, new guy.
Have a look at the Newbie FAQ Section. The link is in my sigline below, and your answer is in there somewhere. (although it has been answered already...)

Please forgive my jumping in here but since we're talking about mags.... does anyone have any extra 5/20 or 5/30 'duckbill' sks mags? (or knows where I can get em?) PM plz...

Thanks!

For real! He must have been ex SAS, Navy Seal, RCMP ERT and naturally knows what the f*ck he's talking about. The vast majority of employees behind the counter at any retailer are nothing but glorified stock hands. Most know SFA about the products in which they sell. Think for yourself and read up on the laws...Even though most Albertans choose to ignore the silly ones;)

Maybe the guy was talking about stripper clips versus the actual mag.

Stripper clips hold 10 and you can't get in trouble for that whereas the mag should be pinned to only accept 5 of the rounds.

The words "clip" and "mag" seem to be used interchangeably these days even by vendors despite being different animals. I don't give a ####, but that could be the source of the confusion.
