A buddy and I both have the CRF1200...don't get me wrong we like the Leica but both are disappointed lately with the performance. Seems to be taking a substantially big object to get any reading over 500 yards! I'm wondering are others having this probem and I'm wondering if its due to weak batteries???

if you are really disappointed, you can just mail it to me and I will put up with your disappointment - hell I'll even pay the shipping. After all anything to help remove frustration and disappointment for a fellow CGN'er :D

Yep, mine blows too. Doesn't even work when there's snow on the ground.

I'll have to try the battery. They aren't a 9v though they're fancy.

Hey dawgmaster and Drillbit, thanx for the info and good on you for not letting the fanboys shout you down.

Brands like Leica, Dillon, Remington, and RCBS enjoy a "can't touch dis" status on CGN which ill serves those of us seeking honest opinion from fellow CGN'rs. A well supported culture here allows for shout downs and down right insults to be leveled at anyone expressing satisfaction with alternative brands, let alone discontent with the "can't touch dis" list. IMHO it is wise to heed black sheep opinions such as yours with gravity. No doubt there are a dozen others out there with the same problems you guys have who just don't see the wave of fanboy nastiness they'll endure as a price worth paying for alerting the rest of us.

I'm in the market for a rangefinder and, quite naturally, appreciate reading about your experiences; "much appreciated" !

Performance is more about how reflective your target is, not really how large. We used to survey out to a km or two and the target was a prism (mirror that reflects light back the exact direction it came) about 2" in diameter.

I am considering the Leica 1600 as it has a bit more power to better get out to 1000m

My Leica 1600 should be arriving by Monday. I will see if I have the same issues and post back.

Like mentioned above its not a 9V its a camera battery of some sort...not sure without popping it out but its something like CR2 ???
I don't honestly care what anyone thinks...franky the thing is working like a POJ...just wanna solve it! Probably the battery, guess we will find out...I will change it this weekend! But bottom line is, the other day I find a coyote cruising the hills, I started ranging him and got readings at the 400-500 range...he went behind a hill so I started ranging hills ahead of him hoping to find one around 800 yards...that's what I was dialed in at...needless to say the Leica never picked up another HILLSIDE beyond 500! That's unacceptable! And this has been happening lots lately with mine and my buddies as well. I will let you all know how the new battery works out!

I bought a "high intensity" flashlight a couple of years ago powered by a couple of those batteries. Damn thing shines like the sun for about 20 min and then those $16.00 batteries go dead (no dimming, just dead).

If anyone is looking for a "like new" flashlight, I've got one for sale cheap. I'll be staying away from any rangefinders that use those CR20minute batteries too.

I have the older model I guess on the Leica 1200.
Uses the rectangular 9 volt battery.
Sure doesn't hurt my feelings.......
I can get 850 yards on the clay bank behind me.
Haven't truly tried it's full capacity yet.
I think I'll put a new battery in it and see if it sharpens it's purpose.

dawgmaster:

I have sold a lot of Geovids, 1600's and 1000's and have never had a complaint about performance. If you are having trouble with readings it is indicative of an issue with the unit. How old is your unit and have you contacted the dealer you purchased it from?

If you don't have local support, I am happy to assist you in getting that thing serviced.

Wow, had my CRF 1200 for several years now and consistently get readings out past 1300 yds. The only time it doesn’t work is in the fog (obviously).

Buy CR2 NIMH rechargebles & charger off Ebay. $10.00 for 2 batteries & charger. Bought them 3 years ago charged them once last fall still going great!

I have ranged elk with my CRF900 to 645yds with no problems.Sounds like either a unit or a battery problem. The first one I bought didn't work at all,Doug at Cameraland had a new one on the way to me before I put down the phone,no issues since.Good product, great service!I'd buy another Leica. Mur

Funny, my 1200 uses a 9v Battery. The only time that it acts up is when the battery is pooched.

Mine is the old 1200....not the crf model

I've ranged deer standing at 600 meters with my Leica 1200 and larger objects well over 1000. I ranged a bluff of trees with it this fall at 1200-odd meters. Not sure why yours doesn't work better. Maybe you're having difficulty holding it steady enough for it to get a return off whatever you're lazing?
