Leica Trinovid 10x50 binos

I had a fair bit of experience with Leica optics (M-series 35mm rangefinders) many years ago and fell in love with them when I worked for a company that sold Leica. I can't afford them anymore, so I stopped trying to keep up :) but...

For many years, Leica has marketed optics that were actually manufactured by Minolta (For camera geeks, the XD-11 and the R3 were the same body). Leica used to market a 70-210 zoom lens for their reflex bodies that sold in the thousands, yet it was made by minolta....the exact same thing was sold by minolta for around $300.

German Leica-made optics are arguably the best in the world. (Leica had a Canadian plant as well; aficionados of Leica preferred the German products) "Leica" products made by other manufacturers are over-priced. I guess I would urge you to make sure the binos are actually a Leica-made product. Minolta makes superb binos as well, for considerably less money.

Hope this helps.

I got the Trinovid 10x50BN and love them, made in Germany so I would guess genuine Leica then. Little heavy but I actually like that as it makes them easier to hold.

These are very bright & extremely high quality. They can handle pretty much as much as you can throw at them and if for any reason they fail on you Leicas lifetime passport warranty will cover repair or replacement as Leica deems fit. They are a bit bulky and heavy compared to the Leica Ultravid, however, @ $1249.99 vs. $1845.00 a little size and weight is not that big a deal :D

If you want to see some flat out incredible optics, don't buy until you've looked through some Fujinons. These are the guys who make a lot of medical optics (microscopes, endoscopes, etc.). I looked through a pair of their rubber armoured 7x50 Marine binoculars, and reached for my wallet without laying them back on the counter. I've used a lot of great stuff over the years, but after 25 years of baking, freezing, and getting used hard, they're as sharp and crisp as ever. They're at least the equal of Zeiss and/or Leica, and half the price.
