I am looking at these 2 binos, anyone have any experience with either and is it worth the extra money for the Ultravids?

I found a camera store in New York that will sell them to me at a great price...

Ultravids $1565 including shipping
Trinovids $1265 including shipping
(US Dollars)

After years of researching I found an independant birding site on the web that did side by side comparisons of binoculars which concluded that the Leica 8x32 Trinovid had superior light-gathering ablility, due to superior coatings, than much larger 7x50 binoculars. Mine work at -40C, which one cannot say about a lot of things. They are not as impact-resistant as individual eye-piece focus military binoculars like the Fujinons, but they are incredible glasses to use over long periods of time. I use mine to judge bear body language at a safe distance. I can't help with the Ultravids as I have no experience with them. I use my 8x32's occasionally on a tripod with a simple piece of dead truck innertube as a big elastic band. If you will be at sea the bigger exit pupil of the 7x42 or 8x42 means it is easier to keep the image in the field of view if you are moving or your hands are unsteady. Enjoy the view!

I spent a little bit of time with a pair of 8*32mm Trinovids. They were compact but a little heavy for the size. Optically I found them pretty good. The ergonomics were just right for the small size.

I also tried out a pair of 10*42 Ultravids. The optics were very, very good. Ergonomically they just did not fit my hand well. The construction was first rate and I would say you could not go wrong with the Ultravids.

Ask the store if they are an authorized Leica USA dealer. If they are you can send the binos to New Jersey, if they ever need cleaning/warranty work. If they are not the binos are grey market and have to go directly back to Germany for warranty. Nice to know in advance.

You can always call Leica USA with the store name and they should be able to tell you if the store is authorized.

I have bought two Leica products in the past year: one from Corlane sports and the other from The Shooting Edge.

As far as I know both are "authorized dealers" so give them a shot at the sale.

Thare are any Leica dealers in Toronto one can go to view both Models? Le Baron carries Leicas but don't have both of these them in stock to allow a side-by-side comparison. Spending this kind of bucks I want to see it and feel it make sure.

I also find the Pentax SP bino pretty good? Anyone any experience?

Both are good binos but IMO the Ultravids are better, optical quality very close the the Swarovski EL's. But the Ultravids are almost the same price as the Swaro EL's which would still be my choice in that price range. IMO the Swarovski EL's are the still the best bino available, although they are NOT cheap.:)

Ultravids

Check out http://www.Peleewings.ca. They stock all the high end stuff to allow side by side comparisons. They are located in southwestern Ontario and I realize you're in Alberta, but their prices are very good for being in Canada. It may be worth your while by the time you figure in taxes and possible brokerage fees. If you do go through the States, check out http://bearbasin.com. They have some interesting specials in regards to the Leica products.
In the price range you're considering, you are splitting hairs in terms of what is "best". Personally, I bought the Swaro 8x42 EL's simply because they were the most comfortable in my hands. You won't go wrong with any of these binos IMHO.

Jim
