So I had a Savage .17 HMR that would not fire at all. I posted up the details of my problem and worked through a few solutions from some CGN'rs. The thread got sidetracked and is long gone.

I replaced the firing pin and the spring and cleaned everything but I still could only get it to fire about every fifth or sixth try. Another CGN'r had some contact info at Savage and set me up to talk with some folks down in Lakefield. I called and they asked for the serial number and then asked me to send the rifle down and they would have a look under the warranty.

I get a call about a week later. It seems that an unmentionable third party had polished everything (including the barrel, bolt and receiver) and that the headspace was so gross that it could not fire and would be very difficult to fix. Since it was "modified" it would not be covered under normal warranty. I thought it was a complete write off, but no - they said they would get her shooting again as a god will gesture - at no charge.

At that point I was pretty impressed with Savage's customer service - until I got a package from UPS last night.

The first thing I saw when I opened the box was a sticker that said "Inspected by #10". I guessed that they just inspected every rifle they worked on. Nope. It was a BRAND NEW rifle, complete with all the accessories and instructions. It even had new gun smell and a set of soft ear plugs.

This was well above and beyond normal customer service. You have to love a made in Canada rifle backed up with that attitude.

I got it out to the range today to line up the scope and see how it felt.

I know that's not the glass it deserves, but it's always held zero and adjusts consistently.

Note the new style 10 rounder I was given by a sympathetic CGN'r.

First group at 50. CCI 17 gr Three rounds.

100 yards with 20 gr Hornady. Five rounds. The only hitch was these fat hollow points didn't want to feed the first round. A little jiggle on the mag was all it took and the other four fed okay.

100 yards with Remington 17 gr. Five Rounds.

I've had the best luck with CCI, but I only had a few left. The trigger is crisp. I cleaned it last night and set the accutrigger to minimum. I haven't measured it yet, but it's not so bad. And I'm getting into the thumbhole stock.

Nice even pattern on the crown.

This looks like my new gopher gun.

I am sure glad it worked out for you C77.
I figured the last thread you did on this deserved a poll...
Yup, who dun the deed...... :D
Party # 1, the seller.
Party # 2, the keeper.
Party # 3, the buyer.
Or the frigg'in butler......... :p
If not for the last math lesson, eye would of dun'ner.....
Kudos to Savage for the kind generosity.
And two more on Lookies chit list.
Just say'in....

Glad it all worked out for you!

Hope everyone knows by now who the seller was.....

Anyways, this is just another reason to keep buying Savage for me! After ridiculous waits for warranty work on a Bushmaster/Remington product that story of yours is refreshing!

Cheers
M

Remington customer service leaves alot to be desired, but my hats off to savage. Glad everything worked out for you. I'm looking into a new 223 and the savages are pretty much the best bang for the buck and with customer services like that, why not.

It's unfortunate that you got a stinker to start with, but EXCELLENT that Savage replaced it with a brand new gun. When I read your first thread, I wondered how Savage might handle the issue if you sent it in, but wow...this is great. :)

I have 2 Savage rimfires and one Savage centerfire rifle. Looking at another rifle now too...guess who makes it? :) The "Savage vs CZ" question is an easy one for me, as much as I like those too.

Can't even call it "customer service" as, you weren't even the customer. I know we're all pretty quick to quip on "poorly executed" transactions, but a corporation accepted a used (and at some point abused) rifle, and replaced with new. Exceptional!

Looks pretty sharp too.

That's great stuff from Savage to step up like this. I have the same rifle and it shoots great, similar Bushnell scope and no problems with it.

I followed the old thread, and looked this thread over. I don't own a Savage, nor have I ever. But any new rifle purchases will have Savage AS the top of my list after reading about their help/intervention in what really wasn't their problem. That's the sort of thing that influences me.

I have the identical rifle and mine likes CCI TNT 17gr and Hornady 17gr Vmax the best.

Hollow points don't feed very well out of the 10 rounders but they're fine out of the 5 rounders.

You should send a letter to Savage, Attn: the person you dealt with, with a thank you, a note saying you're spreading the word about the kind of service you get when you own a Canadian-made rifle and enclose a timcard or something.

Nice to hear about the exceptional CS @ Savage and that I will be taken care of if I ever have a problem with my multitude of Savage rifles... they all have been flawless thus far... "knock on wood." :)

Maybe in some cases, but a close friend of mine had stellar service from Remington.
He bought a NIB 700 XCR in 338 Win Mag.

Turns out it had a machining mark in the chamber that made fired cases difficult to eject. [this, of course, should not have left the factory]
He contacted Remington's service dept about the issue.
They did not ask him to take it to any local smith, but had him ship it to them in Eastern Canada.

They rebarrelled this rifle and thoroughly checked it out before sending it back.
It is a real tack-driver, and the chamber is smooth as glass.
He was treated courteously throughout his dealings with Remington.

Obviously, they pay attention sometimes.

Kudos to Savage on the OP's issue!! :)

to the OP, good deal, they really went the distance for ya....
i was having issues with my 93R17 BSEV, it wouldnt fire either.... every fourth or fifth shot, would go. And no one ever polished anything. I couldnt find anything wrong with it. So i took the firing pin out, and a buddy mig welded a tiny "bead" on the tip of it, i filed it to the right shape, and hardened it, and now it shoots 100%. still wish i knew what the problem was....
