I am sure that people must have discussed this here before I am a little frustrated after a conversation today.

A friend and I were at the Army/Navy surplus in Halifax today. The guy selling the weapons stated that a shotgun could have a barrel length of less than 18" and still be non-restriced.

I told him that no matter how you have your weapon configured, as long as it was able to fire, the minimum length of the weapon had to be 26" folded or not. And as for the barrel, 18" was the minimum.

He agreed with the overall length but argued with the 18in barrel length. Said he had proof to verify.

Maybe I am wrong, I could admit that if proven, but he just seemed to be talking out of his arse.

Again, maybe I am wrong, but not on the talking out of his arse bit; just the minimum legal barrel length.

Regarding the barrel length.

Non restricted semi-auto shotguns must have a barrel 18.5" or longer.

All non semi-auto (pump, single, double, bolt, etc) can have any size barrel from a manufacturer. So yes, there are many examples of non restricted pump shotguns with 14", 12.5" and shorter barrels.

You cannot cut a barrel to less than 18". This would create a prohib. Short barrels must be manufactured to that length.

+1 , this pretty much states all i know regarding barrel length's. Pretty much any manually operated (i think thats the term they used for non-semi auto guns) can be any barrel length as long as the barrel was manufactured that way. Well, it's got to be long enough to chamber the shell too ;).

From what i gather, you can also put a manufactured short barrel on an existing gun, but make sure it complies with 26" oal for non-r (don't quote me on that one though).

Yep, as long as its not a semi-auto, it only has to have a 26 OAL, as LONG AS THE BARREL IS MADE THAT WAY FROM THE MANUFACTORER.

Its pretty neat to see 14" 870's that are legal to hunt with :D

Does the barrel have to be made at the shorter length by the same manufacturer as the shotgun? Or can you buy or have custom made a shorter barrel... You arent cutting it down, its a factory made barrel just not the same factory as made your shotgun.

As long as it is made by a licenced manufacturer (i.e. Dlask) you are good to go. A gunsmith can't do it. I'm not sure about custom 1 offs, say a 12 inch 20 gauge barrel from Dlask. I e mailed them about that and never got a reply.

What if you have an old SXS or O/U that happen's to be the same dimensions as one of the Dominion Arms from CANAM .How do you prove it was NOT made by the manufacture tha way.

I think what Dogzilla is trying to say is that if it fits it shouldnt matter as long as the barrel is made by a licensed manufacturer. I think with an older SxS it would be pretty easy to prove it wasnt made that way if it had a CANAM or Dlask barrel on it.

I think that would be the least of your worries though. Depending on the age of your SxS receiver it might not be wise to be putting a modern barrel and firing modern ammunition from it.
