after returning from a coastal week in bella coola i've been thinking that much more about lens covers for my scope. any one use lens covers, or does any one have any suggestions? any help would be appreciated.

I have seen an ad for a new Leupold lens cap that flips back till it lies flat against the top of the scope. This seems like a really good idea. I don't like how the Butler Creek caps stick up in the air like little flags. The red release catches aren't my thing either. I would prefer black.
I'm hoping that the Leupold caps will also fit my Kahles scopes.
BTW, Leupold has also come out with a set of filters for their objective lenses which should be helpful, but they may only be usable on Leupold scopes. I'm not sure if scopes have a standardised thread systen like cameras

I have a big Kahles 56mm scope and the Butler Creek Flip-Up Cap fits great. I make it flip to the right, though, not straight up.

I looked at those, but I did not want to get the cover in the eye with the 375 H&H

I think Leftent might be referring to the Alumina line of accessories that Leupold has put out. The flip up scope caps are made of aluminum and it looks like they use small magnets to hold closed rather than the spring loaded tab setup used by the Butler Creek ones. Might be worth looking at..... On a side note, I think the newer production Leupold MklV models that come with the flip ups come with Leupy branded covers. The tab (normally red on the Butler Creek covers) is IIRC grey on these ones. Unfortunately, I've read that they aren't as well made as the actual Butler Creek units.

You are correct HSLD, it was the Alumina caps that I saw advertised.
I have no idea of the price, but for alloy I would imagine that they are way more than the $33. ones that Manitou210 got. For that price I would be on them right away!

Butler creek.Unless your scope has an extremely short eye relief (approximately 2" or less)it is virtually impossible for the lens cap to hit you in the eye.
