Leopold vx-1 or vx-2?

There are signifigant differences in the lead free glass, the double spring erectors, and the diamond coat. The fact that you can't see it, doesn't change that.

Also, regarding my previous statement about the vari-x:

•Though the Rifleman line of scopes uses a different maintube (for aesthetic reasons), it is optically the same as the Vari-X II (discontinued for 2001). The adjustments are exactly the same as the Vari-X II (?-MOA friction) as are the lenses and coatings. All lenses, internal and external, are coated with magnesium fluoride. Basically, the Rifleman is a newer-looking matte finish version of the Vari-X II that helped build the Leupold reputation. It is important to note that Custom Shop options (reticle changes, target adjustment installation, etc.) are not available for the Rifleman line of scopes.

It was definitely about time they did something to put the VXI up on another level over the Rifleman, when they both had friction I almost preferred the Rifleman. And with the Redfields in the mix, it was time.

So, should I buy the new VX 2 4-12 40mm or should I buy a used VXIII 4-14 50mm for the same cost as the new VX 2 ? That's my dilema right now. There are alot of scopes to choose from and if I'm spending 600 dollars I want to get the right scope. I have looked at other scopes, but have narrowed it down to this new VX 2, however I found this 3 or 4 yr old VXIII a friend of mine is selling Its in great condition. Which one should I go for?

There are other things to look at like the VX2 has a .5" longer tube for long action mounting, is 5 oz lighter, has .5" more eye relief and a wider field of view at the low end.

For the same money, I'll take longer and lighter.

Thanks Blargen. I think I'm going to buy the new VX2. Im not going to notice much of a difference between the two scopes (4-12 vs 4.5 - 14) and I think the 40mm will fit my gun better. I can also use the existing rings if I stick with the 40mm.
