Hi,

It’s been a few years since I actively looked for a spotting scope with Long Eye Relief. Back then I didn’t have much success, but I thought I’d take another run at it, to see if anything had changed in the market. I’m not too fussy about brand all I really want is a good quality spotting scope with long eye relief.

What is out there?
What do you use?
What would you a avoid?

Thanks in advance

Kowa scopes and their eyepieces are sold separately. Long relief eyepieces are an option.

There are a fair amount of spotting scope manufacturers that will provide a LER eyepiece, and as Tiriaq says, they are an option. Shop around, look at the specifics, read the customer comments, open your wallet to see how deep it is, and then shop here for a used spotting scope, one that meets your requirements. Then buy your LER eyepiece.

+ Vote for Celestron

Engineer - I bought a Celestron 'Calvary'25-75x at the 'old' CT b4 they took over the Chain Lake Zellers, prob 6-7 years ago. Now they're selling 18x-55x for $200+. Mine was on the CT 50% sale for $69.99 back then. A lot depends on your use, maybe for 300yd + I'd spend the extra money?- YMMV ! I've never used V, but unless you're getting a great deal on the Vortex, I'd think twice since they start around $600. I can see .223 holes at 200yds - good enough for me (that's all my local range has- Moncton) but I can see them w/my 18x riflescope, too. But the C lets me see if there's a double hit! Amazon has 60x Celestron for $158+. One caveat, get a good, heavy tripod. Mine wobbles when I'm using the scope - new 'pod in my future ;)
Forgot to add, it does NOT have LER. That's why it wobbles

What’s everyone’s thoughts on Celestron? They seem to be around 1/2 the price of Vortex. Are they half the quality?

I think Celestron are great value... heck, one of my favorite eyepiece is a Celestron LER.

For spotting scope, look for something that use 1.25" astro eyepieces. There are plenty of options, and you are not locked into one manufacturer.
- I'm happy with my Pentax PF80.
- While out birding, had the opportunity to look through some of the Celestron Regal M2, they were pretty darn nice.

If you want true long eye relief, that starts at 19mm and up.... better if over 20mm and heading towards 30mm.

True LER eyepieces are usually fixed power which may or may not suit. I run Kowa as my F class spotter.

Also look at the Athlon Cronus Tactical spotter. HUGE eye relief (30mm) as it operates more like a rifle scope vs a spotting scope. Very nice optics and features... if it suits your tastes and budget.

PM or email.

This is the eyepiece I'm talking about. Celestron Item #: 82002
- 32mm of eye relief
Magnification is dependent of the focal length of your scope.

Thanks Mystic i’ll take a look at Athlon; Vortex has 31mm of eye relief and Kowa has 32mm so they are in that same range as the Athlon and the Celestron SillyMike pointed out (although it doesn’t look like Celestron is available any more, except for the EE)

The leupold GR. 12-40x 60mm has a 30mm eye relief throughout its power range. Eye relief, compact form, light weight,
water resistance and impact resistance are among the reasons they are utilized by US military. There are optically superior spotting scopes available but the leupold has a balance of features that make it desirable for some.

Thanks AP I’ll investigate them.
