Less common calibers; where to buy?

Hello folks,

I like the performance charts of calibers such as 25-06, 6.5x55 and 7mm-08, but looking at WSS and Cabelas they seem to be significantly more expensive than the "regulars" (.243, .270, .308 etc), easily being $30+ while the regulars are ~$20.

I'll probably get into reloading down the road, but would like the option to buy affordable factory ammunition, at least in the beginning.

Where can I find these calibers at reasonable prices?

Thanks

I keep hearing about cheap ammo in the 80's, try looking there. I'm not sure if it's a store or what, be things sure are sweet in the 80's. I heard they don't have the registry there either, and they've never even heard Cretien or Ignatieff.

:p

Problem with oddballs, is they are oddballs. The production numbers aren't high enough to bring costs down, and the stores don't order in big enough quantities, to get good prices. For some calibers, just be happy you can find them at all. And get reloading toute suite!

Youd best get yourself into reloading if you plan to shoot those calibers in quantity. My friend was buying Igman 6.5x55 at Epps for 12 or 13$ a box about a year or so ago.

+1. I haven't found any 6.5x55 for less than $30/box in the Calgary area. I am now reloading at a cost of just over $0.70/rnd for a 53% savings. That is based on buying new brass, too. If you are just reloading your commercial brass then it will be about $.075 cheaper per round, based on what I paid for brass and 8 uses before discard.

I just put in a $230.00 order to Wholesale Sports this morning for 6.5x55 dies, shellholder, crimp die, 200 Match Kings and 100 brass. They had everything I wanted. When you go to a less than available caliber, you had better be able to pay the price!

If you have your heart set on any big game calibres besides the usual .243, .270, .30-06, or .308, I think reloading is a must. Just about everything else is comparatively low volume for ammo manufacturers and is thus more expensive, as well as not always being as easy to find.

Try emailing site sponsor Elwood Epps.

Although I havn't been there yet, I hear they have all kinds of hard to find, odd ball ammo.

I have no idea about their prices though.
