Should hunting CDN big game (Whitetails and larger) be limited to 308dia bullets and bigger?

As others have pointed out, lots of good cartridges under 30 cal that are great for deer or bigger. I can see not allowing 22 centerfires for big game though, as for the most part factory loads have varmint type bullets that aren't suitable for deer or larger. I think most of the guys on here would know to use the right bullet for the job, but probably not the guys who only get out once a year for deer season.

22 hornet legal for deer in Ontario. It can be done but you better be a good shot and damned close. Better to get something more appropriate.

I answered maybe but it's a stupid answer, scratch it off the poll:oops:
Here is my view, the 308 should not be the minimum caliber for large game. But I don't think the 243 should be allowed for large game either, something like the 6.5mm or greater is the smallest that should be allowed for large game. I know some like the 6mm's and I used to use one also but it should be reserved for the few that are truly patient marksmen because critical bullet placement is a must with this little hotshot. Fantastic predator/varmint cartridge though. 8)

This all reminds me of a telephone conversation I had with JD Jones of Handgun Hunting fame. He told of trying to convince the Ohio wildlife agency to legalize handgun hunting. (At that time, you couldn't hunt BG with a handgun in Ohio. Don't know what the deal is now.) The wildlife guys were worried about the outlaw class going out in the woods with their .25's and .32's, and .38 snubbies, and wounding loads of deer. Mr. Jones hypothesized that in the extremely rare event that a gang-banger got within 100 yards of a deer, the odds of him wounding the critter with the straight arm, 90 degree cant, poke and jerk shooting typical of the genre were extremely low. Less than the honest wounding stats for bow hunters, and, (my opinion here, not Mr. Jones') certainly much less than the wounding rate for rifle shooters.

I think the same for rifle calibers. Writing regulations so some dummy doesn't buy a box of 45 grain varmint loads and wound a deer or three is a fool's work. The dummy probably won't wound many critters, as he probably won't hit many. By the time the said individual de-dummys, learns a bit about terminal bullet performance, maybe just a tiny bit about BG anatomy, and field shooting, his lethality will match or exceed any other dummy who buys a .300 Super Whammy Extra Flat, Short, Fat, Magical Killing Special, in a 4 pound Mountain Rifle, and who then proceeds to unleash said .300 SWEFSFMKS at ranges requiring satellite survey techniques to measure. Fortunately, the dude with the .300 mostly misses cleanly, as it is hard to know your bullet drop at 800yards when you sight in at 100 yards, standing.

The seeming lack of concern or embarassment displayed by the hosts of TV hunting shows and videos as they blast round after round at distant running game says it all.

Hey here in Ontariario, we have caliber restrictions south of the province can't use anything bigger than 270.
Most of that area can't use a rifle at all for deer, shotgun only.
If the regulations were drawn up by seasonned hunters, they might make sense, but politicians are ruled by votes, and lobby groups, not by experience and brain cells.

South of the province puts you in lake Ontario.... .... :p
Sorry Bob... but you said it
Anyway J/C is correct and in the shotgun only areas the use of slugs is the norm but some idiots still use buckshot

The 243 still works very good for deer.Have shot Whiteteil and some Monster Mulies with 95 grn. Nos.Part.@ 3000 fps.All one shot kills. All blasted right through the animal. Also shot several Black bears with the same results.Would not
recommend it for Moose or Elk though.Been using this combo for over 25 yrs.and
if I do my part the rifle always seems to do its.

This a ridiculous poll. :?
It would be fairly pointless even if you were asking it about moose.
Every cal from 25 up have taken whitetail and the 6.5x55 is renowned for it's giant killing capabilities on European moose and alg.
Need I go on??
Get a life, Dosing. :|
