Lesser powered loads for less recoil?

Can you load a .30-06 down to .30-30 power levels, or a .270 down to 7x57 levels? Are there any trade-offs in cartridge accuracy, barrel wear, chamber pressures, case life or other such things?

I'm going to be asking this around the clubhouse tomorrow night. So far I've found Remington makes a reduced recoil load, in Europe there's a load called the 30-30-06, downloaded to .30-30 levels. I'm positive with a light bullet and a .308 recipe, there's no damage, as the construction for both cartridges is the same.

Yes you can, See

or

in my opinion
for best results if you can neck size brass or size brass so you don't push back the shoulder---- so you do not get smoky residue on brass
(the lower charges might smoke cases )

Trail boss is the one I would try first (very bulky powder fills case)
(do not compress Trail boss)

but it depends on what you want to do

You also can try Cast bullets

Note
Some powders can be position sensitive

Give SR4759 a try. It was designed for reduced loads and works well. It's a bulky powder, so even with the light loads the case is fairly full.

Recoil will be reduced to a joke level.

X2 on the cast bullets. You can easily reach .30-30 power in a .30-06 with a 170 - 200 gr cast lead bullet. A .30 cal 170 gr flat nosed lead bullet at 1800-1900 fps is a deadly load. With a hard gas check bullet you can reach 2400 fps.

I use a 60% of max charge of H4895 for reduced loads in my rifles from a 223 to a 300WM with good results. The charge does not fill the case but is accurate out to 100 yds and since I use it for the main load in my wife's 7-08 I always have some around.

Reduced Loads

When I took a break from shooting I parted with my 9422M and a Marlin in the same caliber. I'm back shooting but I don't want to spend money on another .22Mag.
Enter Trail Boss powder. I loaded a box of old IVI cases with 12 grains of Trail Boss behind some bulk pack 55 grain FBSP's for a Browning A Bolt 22-250. I have never considered the A Bolt to be very accurate but the results were spectacular. I won't say what they were because I hate to be thought a liar.
I now have a very accurate rifle that rates somewhere between a 22Mag and a Hornet and that's just what I want.
My next trials will be 30-06, 30-30 and 303 Brit. Can't wait.

.30-06 - The Youth Load data shows a 125 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip with 40.5 grains of H4895 at 2615 feet per second muzzle velocity. That results in a 253 yard MPBR with 1135 foot pounds of energy at the MPBR. The 100 yard elevation is +2.8” and the 200 yard elevation is +1.0”. The recoil values are 10.2 foot pounds of recoil force and a recoil velocity of 9.2 feet per second. The maximum load for the same bullet shows 3229 feet per second which results in 17.1 foot pounds of recoil at 11.7 feet per second.

Im about to test that powder soon, Ive loaded up some 222 rem, 40 bullets supposed to go around 1400fps...not much faster than a 22lr.

Also going to test some loads in 45-70 for fun.

Got most of the data from an older (#9) Speer Manual.

I have been loading some 30gr Bergers with 19grs of H4895 in one of my 204s. Up to 75yds I do not have to adjust my scope but at 100 yds I would have to change POI and it is not worth it for the purpose I'm useing it for. If I get some more time this summer I will try a few more H4895 loads in some of my other varmint rifles just for the fun of it.

I use the little Lee 90 gr. 32 cal. .314 dia. SWC shot as cast with two light coats of Lee Alox in my SKS and Mosin rifles which have .312 dia. bores for the X39 a load of 2.7 to 3.0 grs. Bullseye gives 2" groups or less out to 50 yds. thats as far as I have tested it.

I use the same bullet sized to .311 lubed once before and after sizing in my .308 bore rifles like my 300 Sav. and 30-30 but they work just as well in 308 up to 30-06 range. for these cartridges I like a load of 3.0 to 3.5 grs. Bullseye accuracy is equal to the above loads,

With 3.5 grs. Bullseye in my 30-30 with a 21" barrel MV runs on average just under 1085 fps. with a 5 shot string.

Uhh, don't "just google" for reduced loads. Never take a load off the wondernet unless from a recognized authority like Hodgdons, whereat they tell you how to calculate the reduced rifle loads using H4895, for instance.

Other component manufacturers may also describe such loads, I dunno, I never needed to stray past H4895.

Put in another vote for IMR Trail Boss.

I also use SR4759 but prefer the Trail Boss.

One of the ways to figure out the load data for TB if you can't find data is to fill the case to where the base of the bullet would sit. Weigh it and calculate 70% of that for your starting load. I use about 7.5gr for 30-30 and 11gr for 303. Both with hard cast boolits. You can shoot all day, your shoulder will be fine and so will your wallet!

Question for anybody using 4759...do you use any kind of filler to keep the power at the bottom, just wondering if I should use it. at 6.5gr. of power in a 222 rem case. its quite empty. I was thinking of stuffing some toilet paper down to keep powder from moving up towards the bullet before the primer goes off.

Do not use toilet paper !!!!!!!!!!! if you do you are asking for a ringed barrel or worse

What is your load that you are using? and why are you using it so low
I looked for some load data on the 222 and have some cast and jacketed data and no one lists data that low
your load is so low, that I dont want to think about it
and I have used some low volume charges in a few rifle loads (cast bullet)

For some answers on the filler Check out

I will get back to you on the filler

Good to know, I had read about someone doing without any issues but wanted to double check.

The load im using is from the Speer#9 -start- 6.5gr. SR4759 behind a 40gr. bullet. 222 rem.

If you want to use loads that low, I'd recommend getting Trail Boss. Really really.

I've seen people use "Pillow filler"... I've never tried it cause it seems to be too much of a pain in the butt for what its worth. Save yourself the headache and potential un-even burn; keep the SR4759 close to the recommended loads but don't go above max - because it burns so fast it could cause some pretty high pressures.
