Lesson Learned

At one point I had an ATI strike force, scout mount with a bushnell TRS25, tapco mag, weapons light and magpul RVG. Mots of it has come off and now it runs with ATI stock, tapco magazine and Iron sights only. This setup feels pretty solid and shoots how an SKS should should. I couldnt hold a zero with my rail and red dot

I'm still hoping for the ultimate tacticooled sks.... but I'm not holding my breath.

Wow, that's an SKS?

I could never understand why anyone would bother modding an SKS. Mine is stock save for a recoil pad and shoots great. However I would jump on that kit above, it's amazing!

That's what I am talking about! I wish there was a retailer that sold kits like that; or at least something similar.

when I got my first sks I played with the crapco stocks and the "extended" mag that are pinned at 5rd I quickly learned that it makes no difference only thing I do to add length of pull is put a slip on recoil pad on it

I've got one in an older style ATI folder without the telescoping butt. ProMag scope mount for a TRS 25, the bayonet unscrewed easily on this one, so it's stowed away for now with the laminate stock. It's just nice for bush carry when I'm doing nothing in particular. Didn't notice a huge decline in accuracy but I don't really go for precision with that gun. Dinner plate at 100 is good enough for my purposes. The other one wearing original hardwood is more accurate I figure, it'll ring the 200 yd plate pretty much every time with the iron sights. I really wouldn't alter another one, or likely go any farther with the lightly modified one I own. All the muzzle brakes, rails, flashlights, etc...just seem like more to carry.

lol.
I don't mind either way.
for certain things i think the tactical setup can be nice.
Did a rifle up for a friend and their was a couple useful things it had that you don't get with stock setup..
foregrip with a bipod that pops out the bottom with the press of a button at the top of the grip for instance.
Its much easier to offhand with a foregrip as well.
pistol grip at the trigger is also easier to hold/handle.
The telescopic stock thing is ### i ended up just putting it all the way forward as the closer i am into the gun feels more comfortable anyways to me.

Now all the gadgets people think they need are lost on me. does anyone really need a Lazer / Flashlight ect on a sks? umm doubtful very doubtful.
Might be ok if your going in to track a wounded animal i dunno but i doubt people are using em for that anyways.

I damn near cried when he decided he wanted to do this to his gun because it shoots 2/3moa -1moa groups @ 100m. and i was doing so with ironsites so i basically said to him
are you sure you want to mess with this? its not a sniper rifle man? but he was into it so i helped.

It still shoots the same from what i could tell at the range and that little bipod in the foregrip was a nice handy thing to have , So much better than bulky bipods hanging off the gun.

and the overall feeling of the gun was good too.

----------------------

Now will i do this to my gun? not very likely unless something happens to the wood stock on it. Id rather try to add a ak grip on the front if i really really want a foregrip but even then.

It kills me inside how they remove the top handguard on the gas systems for modding these sks's to tactical not really any going back after that.

A Tapco stock and the wooden stock were included when I bought my SKS, but count me in with the "spending a ton of money defeats the purpose of an SKS" crowd. I don't feel that the design of the SKS is conducive to using detachable magazines; magazine changes are awkward and slower than other designs and I feel you're better off top loading with stripper clips. An aftermarket stock may have an adjustable LOP, but I think there are cheaper ways to address that issue. I'm not a fan of pistol grips on anything that wasn't designed from the ground up, to have a pistol grip. While it isn't really an issue with the SKS, I find that most long guns originally designed to use a straight stock have their controls better set up for use with a straight stock.

I would say that everything has its place. A guy from my range who knew nothing about the rifles got a particularly troublesome example of an SKS from Lever Arms. The stock is so loose that the action wiggles back and forth half an inch and the gas tube is broken. Replacing the stock and gas tube for him would essentially save the rifle.
