Lethality of the 22 LR standard velocity round

I am always surprised when I watch the forensic files on the tube and the majority of murders are with a .22. Even a guy who shot and killed eight people in a mall then himself used a .22. Definitely dangerous and should be treated with as many safety precautions as any other caliber.

22 Lethality

I used to work in a small private slaughter house in the 1980s and we use to use a single shot 22 and a sledge hammer . I was trained to put the 22 right up close to the steers head and if you did it right he dropped like a rock . needless to say I did;nt get off working at the place - slaughter house - and I let the big Yugoslavian who was one of the owners weild the sledge hammer . never under estimate a 22 . :dancingbanana:

Better yet someone should write an article on the untold critters that were only wounded by the 22 rimfire. If the truthful numbers were known the anti's would have a heyday!! I HATE rimfires personally would never use one on anything . Don't own one.
Wounded my fair share of stuff as a kid with them. Like to think their only purpose is for targets (the none living kind) Just my personal opinion. Cleaned more than one game animal with rimfire bullets and buckshot under the hide.

ANY gun can wound a creature when a person doesn't know proper shot placement....

Sh%t we had better ban it. Maybe then the anti's won't get upset.

I agree poor usage of the round is a training issue and is cruel. People should not be retards with what target they engage with .22. It is questionable to use on anything bigger than gophers.

Just as a note:

THE ANTIS HATE ALL:
FIREARMS,
AIRSOFT
PAINTBALL (See the recent BBC World articles on the potential evil of paintball).
KNIVES (once the above 3 are gone)

AND WENDY HATES MEN IN GENERAL (just read one of her "books").
SO STOP EVEN TAKING THEIR OPINION INTO CONSIDERATION!!!

Anyone shooting large game with .22 is either very hungry or a moron.

I don't mean to insult but it sounds like you are just a poor shot. I usually take the head off most things I shoot. They don't go anywhere:D.

Please don't get the idea I've tried a rimfire on big game. Just wanted to point out there are others that do and I've managed to see the results.
Rimfires certainly have a place in the shooting world. Just don't see them as hunting rifles for my own use. Tons of BETTER stuff out there to use.

I've killed dogs, cats, rabbits, ducks, sheep, pigs, halibut, cows and probably a few things I've forgotten about with a .22LR

Don't underestimate it's lethality.

Hope you didn't put a hole in you boat when ending the halibut...

Do tell!

;)

Don't keep saying that RF is dangerous to human life. They'll have us pin our mags to 5 like all the others!

It's a useless bullet unless you hunt hamsters or salamanders and frogs!
It practically bounces off human skin at any range.
The 17HMR leaves a welt less than a paintball or airsoft. Never forget this!;)

Shooting large halibut in the head with a .22LR is pretty common. Using a handgun is easier than using a rifle.

You gaff or harpoon them to hold on, shoot in the head , then wait for it to stop thrashing before you bring it aboard.

I figured that much, they are big buggers, so I was just wondering exactly how you managed. Seen a few shark and barracuda accidents, even a swordfish injury while working in the Caribbean, so I thought that the Halibut logistics would be interesting.

So you'll let me shoot you with my Savage to prove this point? Don't worry I have pigs just in case you are wrong....

If a Game Warden used it to kill problem bears (only when the bear was in a town) then I think it can certainly be taken serious. Not to mention that for 10 years my grandfather used nothing but a .22 to hunt deer to feed his starving family because that is all they had.

If you're saying that it's useless then maybe you should learn to shoot a little better.

Now granted there are better (bigger) guns that one can use for hunting and I would never use a .22 for hunting big game unless I was poor and needed the food.

I think Mike was being facetious, as in make the anti's think of it as a spitball gun/caliber.

An even better read the second time. I never underestimate .22. I have seen shorts do some surprising things.

grandmother lived on a farm and while I was there shot squirals at 250yards iron sites.. right between the eyes and droped them on the spot.. she likes the birds but hates the squrals because they eat the eggs..

I am in the medical field and have seen the results from a .22 vs a human skull. the .22 win most times. it wil not penitrate through and through, but that is why it works so well. It bounces around in the skull and causes massive dammage to the brain.
