The Lethbridge Fish and Game Association shooting range has once again been closed by our lovely City Council. I would like to make a personal request to everyone who has shot in Lethbridge, or would like to shoot in Lethbridge to please write letters to city council urging the range to be re-opened. FYI am an active member and user of the range, but do not have offiicial standing this request is coming from me, not the range officials, but I highly doubt they will have a problem with my request.

Here is the e-mail I just received:

LFGA – Range Closure Important Meeting February 23rd.

Folks,

Thank you for all of your very strong support for the range and our organization. You are invited to a meeting to discuss the closure of the range by city council.

It is that time again and we have a new council and a new Mayor. Last night, I was invited to a meeting at City Hall and at that meeting city hall indicated that they would be closing the range again. Today, I got the email from Ashley Matthews confirming their intention. Ashley has been very supportive in the past and we were working with him to get some grant money from the city to begin the process of finding a new location for the range. Please see his message below.

I have scheduled a meeting for all members and interested people at the Fish and Game Hut for 7PM next Thursday February 23rd. Please spread the word and do your best to attend.

This is a town historically has supported the rights of gun owners and your voice are important once again, please be polite and professional…

You may wish to talk to all of the aldermen and the mayor to express your feelings once again about the council’s decision to close the range and to determine their positions. Be patient, you may have to do this numerous times over the next few weeks and we hope you can join the “public debate” when it is announced.

The following website will provide you with their contact information:

Sincerely,

Allan

Subject: FW: Fish and Game Association Shooting Range

Dear Allan,

As we discussed this is to confirm the City is exercising its right to request immediate closure of the shooting range until further notice. This closure is due to new information provided to the City regarding stray bullets. A report will be provided to City Council for public debate on a date yet to be determined, and Council will then provide further direction on this matter.

The decision to close the shooting range is about the responsibility the City of Lethbridge has to ensure public safety. If further clarification is required please contact me at your convenience.

Thanks, Ashley
Mr. Ashley Matthews

well if the city decided to put a tree line on top of the coulee it would limit stray bullets coming over the hill:eek:.........it should have been put in years ago......but again the city planners have thier heads up thier butt:pirate:........not to mention get the dog walk area out of there:runaway:.......more importantly since the area is being developed in the general area and an eletrical station......too much development:50cal:

The lease is up in 2035(or 2036) and by then the LFGA planed on moving the range somewhere else, but we thought we had over 2 decades to find a new location and build it up. Overnight is not possible and this will seriousley impact all Lethbridge shooters for years if we cannot get it re-opened.

This is a sad day for southern alberta, Heres to hoping that taber can get theirs up and running. Please write to Lethbridge council on this matter.

Here is a copy of the email I sent every member of the Lethbridge city council:

I implore the members of the Lethbridge city council to work towards keeping the Fish and Game Clubs rifle and pistol ranges open. The club hosts regular I.P.S.C (International Practical Shooting Confederation) pistol matches including regular stops on the Alberta provincial circuit as well as hosting the Canadian Nations every few years. I'm sure I don't need to tell you about the exposure as well as positive financial benefits this brings to your city. The club also hosts numerous other events including youth shooting programs that form the foundations for the future Olympic shooting team members.
For many of us in Alberta the various matches hosted by the LFGA are our favorite events of the year. The city of Lethbridge has one of , if not the, nicest facilities in Alberta: a national caliber range; and it should be proud of it.

Thank you for taking the time to read this,

Hello
Can anyone sum up the outcome? After about checking through about 10-12 pages on the other thread I bounced my head off my desk.

Walter?
