Odd that the entrance is so large and exit is small.... Contrary to what I see with my 30 Cals....

My buddy was using his new CZ527 7.62x39 with the Barnaul SP ammunition and the buck he shot looked like the pictures above. The entry hole was massive and unfortunately the animal quartered away slightly so it destroyed a lot of the front quarter on the way out. I shot a larger buck with my 300 WSM and the hole looked liked a laser through the animal. There was a lot of the "magnum jelly" in the wound channel and under the skin/muscle sheath but it was definitely cleaner. The funny thing is that 7.62x39 deer was flopping around when he died but my 300 WSM deer fell straight down.

No ballistic's geek, but the shock wave transmitting out from the 300 must have pretty powerful.
Whereas the 7.62 x 39 tore a jagged hole, which looks impressive of course. But transferring shock, it would have fallen way short of the 300 I'm guessing. Hence the Bang-flop.
 
I looked up that old article. It is from "African Perspectives" and the series "Current African Cartridges" and the title is "The 6x45 mm for small bushveld game: a niche cartridge at short range" by Chris Bekker. He references some tests done by Gregor Woods which was published in Man Magnum, November 1992, page 36 and again in the December, 1992 Issue where there is a field review of 26 animals taken. Does anyone have, or have access to those aforementioned articles? I'd be much obliged if you could post or send me a copy.

Cool thread. I'm surprised as heck at the naming of the cartridge.
I chose .303 because the results I get using 180gr federal Sp , at very close ranges (15 to 40 yards) is very similar given same shot placement. Although my bullet recovery has been very low with most being pass thru hits. Very low shocked area and very dead animal, very quickly. Same deer, ranges ect using a .308 and 7mm rem mag...... Lots of trauma/meat shock.
I love heavy bullets out of a bucked down 18.5" enfield #1mk3 action. The put short range deer and moose down with authority ;)
But now this thread has got me thinking. Burning less powder to make a deer just as dead might just be my new hobby over the winter. LOL

awe, the poor sweet thing! Couldn't ya just eat beef instead!:( You're right, he is/was a nice buck, you are not so nice!

Yes, in the event I get tired of eating game, or am unfortunate enough to run out of it, beef will be on the menu. Especially beef that comes from these fellas:
