It's my first Lee Enfield and I'm looking for something with history. The bore isn't anything to write home about, other than that the metal is in nice shape. Wondering how much money I should bother putting into desporting it, or whether I should pick up a nicer piece (Longbranch or Savage). Took a look around at AllAboutEnfields and 303, didn't see a whole lot of specific information. Perhaps one of you scholarly fellows (smellie & buffdog, I'm looking in your direction!) could help me out. It's a commercial export, BNF stamps all over the barrel.

Looks like the original stampings were ground, rifle was re-serialed?

The receiver has some nasty repairs to it, porous welds on the "ears". Was this a post-war modification?

Any and all help appreciated.

Thanks Badger, appears I have a B.S.A., also the faint stamping in the metal buttstock adapter is the same as the serial that was restamped, so everything is matching. Also, I've been looking at pictures of war time receivers and seen similar welds, can anyone confirm that they were manufactured like this?

I believe that the welds to secure the charger bridge were done during refurbishment. Not unusual to see these welds. The serial on the butt socket was likely restamped at the same time that the bridge welding was done. The original number was too faint.

That's actually a big relief. It's certainly not a show gun, but I'll set her up in a full stock and make her a shooter again after checking headspace. Thanks for your help guys.
