It's my first Lee Enfield and I'm looking for something with history. The bore isn't anything to write home about, other than that the metal is in nice shape. Wondering how much money I should bother putting into desporting it, or whether I should pick up a nicer piece (Longbranch or Savage). Took a look around at AllAboutEnfields and 303, didn't see a whole lot of specific information. Perhaps one of you scholarly fellows (smellie & buffdog, I'm looking in your direction!) could help me out. It's a commercial export, BNF stamps all over the barrel.
T stamp in bolt channel
Crown (over) GR (over) X (over) P
Crown (over) E (over) 5T
Looks like the original stampings were ground, rifle was re-serialed?
The receiver has some nasty repairs to it, porous welds on the "ears". Was this a post-war modification?
From what I can make out
T (over) E (over) 3E
T (over) U (over) U
T (over) E (over) 3E
Any and all help appreciated.
