Here's my "Welfare gun". Savage action, 28" Montana rifleman barrel set up to eliminate the barrel nut, brake, Stockade adjustable stock, Sharpshooter trigger, Sharpshooter bolt handle. Scope is a Mark 4 8.5-25 TMR in Mark 4 Rings. I think I sold it yesterday, since its position has been usurped by a Bat actioned Defensive Edge Canyon rifle. It's pretty much the opposite of a welfare gun.:D

My 28" is about 200 FPS slower than my friends' get out of their 30" barrels,( 2650 versus 2830-50 fps) but there are a few other factors in play. I have to load several grains of the same powder (H1000) under the 300 SMKs to have anything like acceptable case life with the Nosler brass, compared to Remington brass. I also seem to have a slow barrel compared to their 30" Gaillards, which doesn't suprise me one bit.

I am able to console myself for a couple of reasons. 1st, my speed is 50 fps more than Lapua ever claimed for their factory loads in a 26" barrel. 2nd, the 30" Hart barrel on my new Edge doesn't seem to have the same issues.:) 3rd, my slow bullets are killing everything they hit, a few extra comeups don't matter much.

O I'm sorry, you must be new. welcome to CGN :)

All we ask is you avoide trolling and give input on topics you know a thing or two about. Thx.

Back on topic.

I remember when that one PO was shot in Quebec with a 338...some people I spoke with insisted the 338 was only used for hunting elephants...???

ooppss...sorry for the highjack...

What's the difference between a .338 LM and Edge?

338 LM has a larger bolt face (need to get a custom bolt in most cases) and you have available the very best brass - Lapua (currently on 7th reload on one batch and still going strong). 338 Edge is built on a standard magnum bolt face (7mm Rem Mag, 300 win Mag, 300 RUM), and uses 300 RUM brass that needs the case neck expanded to accomodate the .338 bullet diameter. With the 338 Edge, you are stuck with soft Remington and Nosler brass only, that I have found (in my 300 RUM) does not last much past 3 or 4 reloads before primer pockets loosen up. Brass for the 338 Edge (300 RUM ~$75 per 50) than the 338 Lapua (~$280 per 100), but factoring in case life, overall brass costs are similar.

My 338 Lapua pushes 300 SMKs over 87.4 grains of RL 25 at 2730 fps and 87.8 grains H1000 at 2680fps out of a 28 1/2" barrel.

The 338 lapua I'm very familiar with. I'm out with the company of a timberwolf just about every week.

The 338 edge I've never seen. What kind of speeds do people get out of it?

Google .338 edge and quite bit come up from a guy in the US who helped to main stream the cartridge. Defensive Edge is the company I believe. I think he coined the edge name however the .338-300 ultra has been around for a while. For something really interesting google .338 sin A newer wildcat that can be built using standard long action mag boxes. It is basically a 330 dakota improved. The guy who developed it is getting 3005 FPS with a 250 grain Sierra bullet loaded to an OAL that fits in a savage long action box mag
