Let's see those $299 Winnipeg SIR RC K98's

When did they start selling those?

Seems like they have plenty of M91/30's in 7.62x39 too.
At least they have cheap ammo.

Do they even have any? I got my catalogue too, but was under the impression they wee sold out?

Either way, they will be from the same batch as the P&S and TradEX rifles.

Nope. Just went there yesterday and the only mil-surps they had were M44's and those $700 P38's.

Lats time I was there they had sold out of the M91/30's. Also the K98's sold out long before they ever hit the counter. They did say they were getting more K98's in but i don't know a time line.

As for those P38's. The one I looked at was horrible and that was when they were still over $800.

The 7.62 milsurp ammo is about the only thing they have there that is cheap.

..sorry..
are we talking about P&S militaria, or SIR mail order..

why don't people create a context when posting..

Same K98 rifle, different suppliers, different prices!!!

ah i see em at SIR yeah.k i get it.

seems neato.
just says refinished.....they arent russian capture marked or anything eh?

Maybe I'd like to pick one of these up..

they seem ill.

ill?

They will be hot dip reblued, often over mild pitting. The receiver ring will often be marked with the big Russian "X" to indicate refurb. All parts will be mismatched except receiver and barrel. Many parts will be electro-pencilled matching by someone with the skill of a vodka fuelled peasant.

The left side of the buttstock will have a big shallow belt-sanded into it and a new serial number deeply and roughly stamped there. The whole affair will be slathered in a fresh coat of shallec whose quality will make the refurb M91/30 Mosin shellac look like a fine French Polish.

Bores vary from barely shootable to like new. Some rifles will have swastikas pinged out, others will be intact. Luck of the draw.

Parts will generally NOT be "period correct" to the dates on the receivers.

That about summs it up, but what do you expect for a $300 K98k? Certainly not a righteous $2000+ correct vet trophy ;)

At least P&S lets you choose which one you want and lets you see what you are getting on-line before you buy.

Just as Cam said the K98 are long gone; sold in hours.

Rumour has it they are soon to run out of 7.62, so buy it while you can.

I doubt even $475 will buy you much - though you might get lucky and find a decent east or west german refurb for that. Typically that's Yugo refurb money, and even they aren't all that much better than the RC ones, with improper serial markings, scrubbed markings, etc.

I'm surprised no-one has questionned this:

I got one of the better RC's, and don't intend to "restore" it. IMO, once you strip the finish, add a cleaning rod and otherwise "correct it", it's now just a ?????

I'm not saying that RC's will ever be very collectible - but at least it's an arsenal rebuild that's well documented, not a "Mitchell's Mauser" type of restoration.

Mines staying the way I got it.

In all honesty, I don't keep a perfect "vet return" K98k in my personal collection. I've had one before, but German stuff isn't the focus of my interest.

My representative piece is a later East German rebuild of a byf44 with a new unissued East German 8mm barrel and the Cech-style front sight hood. It's like new, but typically mismatched. Quality FAR exceeds the Yugo and Russian rebuilds and I would recommend these post-war German refurb rifles to ANYONE as a place-holder for those whose primary collecting interest is not in perfect original Nazi collectibles.

I don't know about your RC, but I found little bits of shellac in my hand each time I handled it.

Do you really think it's worth the $100 premium to pick a code (it's just a mismatched, ground, buffed and sanded RC K98K)?
